Chapter 21

John didn’t care about Sierra’s reaction at all.

“I already made my choice,” Sierra said, making it clear she would never beg for peace.

John glanced at his fingers, still feeling her warmth at his fingertips. “You’ve made up your mind.”

Sierra, stubborn as ever, didn’t respond. It was as good as admitting it.

John stood up. Even after what had just happened, he straightened his suit like a perfect gentleman.

“Jade City has more than one wealthy person, but I guarantee no one but me will dare lend you any money,” he said, adjusting his cuffs. “That includes your dear friend Holly.”

“What are you going to do?” Sierra’s heart jumped.

“Nothing,” John replied, stepping closer. “But if you go to her for help, that’s a different story.”

Sierra’s hands clenched at her sides. She had been planning to ask Holly for help, just to get through this crisis and pay her back slowly.

“And one more thing…” John deliberately dragged out the words.

Sierra tensed.

He closed the distance between them. “Next time, try to be honest. Don’t criticize me with your words while your hands are busy grabbing my shirt. You always loved clutching my shirt when you got passionate, remember?”

He even glanced at the wrinkles she had left on his shirt.

That was the last straw for Sierra. Her frustration boiled over, and she slapped his face.

But John caught her hand. She tried to pull away, but he held on tightly.

“Losing your temper won’t help,” John said, squeezing her hand before finally letting go. As he left, he threw out one last sentence. “You’d better focus on how you’re going to get the money for the surgery together.”

“I don’t need you to worry about it,” Sierra forced herself to stand tall.

John buttoned his suit jacket, his eyes as cold as ever. “I hope so.”

He walked away as if nothing had happened between them. As he passed Dr. Smith’s office, the doctor stopped him. “Mr. Henderson?”

John turned.

“There’s something I forgot to mention,” Dr. Smith said after some thought. “Before the condition of Ms. Bell’s mother got worse, someone went into her hospital room. He didn’t do anything, just stood by the bed for over ten minutes, but I thought you should know.”

“Did you recognize him?” John asked.

“No. Never seen him before,” Dr. Smith replied, pulling up the security footage on his phone. “But judging by his clothes and manner, he wasn’t just anyone.”

John enlarged the video.

Soon, a man about forty or fifty, very good–looking and calm, appeared on the screen. He stood by Sierra’s mom’s bed with his back to the camera, doing nothing for over ten minutes.

“Did you tell Sierra about this?” John asked, handing the phone back, feeling like the man looked familiar.

“No, I haven’t,” Dr. Smith said.

“Don’t tell her for now,” John instructed.

“Understood,” Dr. Smith nodded.

John saved the video, opened his chat application, and sent it to a contact with the message, “Find out who this man is and what he has to do with Sierra’s mom.”

The reply came quickly, “Got it.”
