Lucy stared at the blank screen with a frown. “Huh.”
Kenneth caught the shift in her expression. “What is it?”
“The records for Sierra’s mom were scrubbed by an extremely skilled hacker,” Lucy said.
She stopped her fingers on the keyboard, then propped her chin on her hand. She stared at the blank page.
For some reason, the blank page felt familiar. It was like she already knew what was coming. Something like a nasty gore image, meant to scare her off.
The instant the thought landed, the page flashed, and the exact kind of picture she expected filled the screen.
“Holy moly!” Kenneth jerked back, staring at the bloody, gruesome image. He rubbed his arms. “Why’d you pull that up out of nowhere?!”
“It’s just a picture.” Lucy closed the laptop and stopped the investigation. “Do you really have to be that scared?”
“And you tell me you weren’t scared?”
Kenneth’s voice trailed off when he realized she hadn’t even flinched just now.
“Hey, where are you going?” he called after her. “Are you done already?”
“Going back to sleep,” Lucy said. She kept walking, but her mind stayed on what had happened just now.
Where had she seen it before?
Someone she knew.
But those people should have had nothing to do with Anna.
Kenneth didn’t dare stop her. If she snapped, she would hit him hard. Lucy had never been the type to pull her punches.
So, he reported it to John in some other way.
[Lucy gave it a quick look earlier and basically confirmed a highly skilled hacker had buried Anna’s files. She said she’ll look again after she sleeps.]
John got the text on his way to the hospital, where Pamela was. His fingers moved, and he sent back a casual reply.
[Got it.]
Kenneth sent another text. [Where are you?]
[Hospital.]
When Kenneth realized John wasn’t going to see Sierra, he relaxed. He was worried they would end up in a fight over the divorce.
Sierra might look soft and fragile, but after what Kenneth had seen that night at the hotel, she might come at John with a knife if she ever found out that he wasn’t planning to divorce her at all. The mental image was too bloody for him to think a second time.
John, however, didn’t think about any of that.
Half an hour later, a car pulled up at the hospital.
John headed straight for Pamela’s ward. As he reached the door, he heard her complaining to her friend Nora.

“I’ve been behaving myself for the past few days. Isn’t that enough? I haven’t argued with him, made a scene, or bothered him! And what do I get? He’s still not here.”
“Sir,” the two bodyguards called out in unison.
Still annoyed about getting yelled at last time, they shouted extra loud on purpose.
Pamela’s head snapped toward the doorway after hearing the bodyguards.
She locked eyes with John. His eyes were deep and dark.
“John, you’re here…”
Nora stood up immediately and slipped out without wasting another second. “You two talk. I won’t disturb you.”
John said nothing as he walked toward the bed at an even pace. He wasn’t openly cold, but the pressure coming off him was
heavy.
“I thought you were never coming again,” Pamela said.
She had been genuinely scared these last few days, especially after what he said yesterday about collecting her corpse after she threatened to jump.
“Are you still angry about me asking you to stay last time?” she asked.
When John reached the bed, the bodyguards hurried over with a chair, and he sat down slowly.
The room felt even heavier.
He stayed silent.
Pamela’s nerves tightened by the second, and she quickly said, “If you’re still upset, I’m sorry. I promise it won’t happen again, alright?”
She sounded sincere as she reached for him without thinking.
