John leaned away without a word.

Pamela’s hand, about to pull his, froze in the middle of the air.

Her unease grew. The heavy air in the room left her mind scrambling, and she bit her lip.

“Say something, alright? It really scares me when you’re like this.”

“Scared?” John didn’t react.

Pamela couldn’t read the expression on his face.

She nodded. “Yes.”

John’s voice stayed flat. “If you’re so scared, why are you still brave enough to work with Solomon?”

Pamela’s heart skipped a beat. Remembering how badly the two brothers got along, she denied it immediately. “I didn’t work with him. We just ran into each other and talked for a bit.”

“Then explain what happened on Wednesday night,” John said.

“I…” Pamela didn’t expect him to bring it up that bluntly. “I just wanted you to keep me company. I didn’t want you to say I’m important when you actually ignore me.”

“I already gave you the chance.” John’s eyes were dark. “You refused it.”

Confusion flickered in Pamela’s eyes. She didn’t understand what he meant, but she knew he cared about what happened before. The reason he had been staying away and ignoring her calls was to teach her a lesson.

“If you need anything after this, talk to Robin.” John’s gaze stayed steady and empty. “Don’t contact me anymore.”

“Why?” Pamela was truly scared now.

She didn’t understand why he had to treat her like this. All she had done was call him over. She just didn’t want him with Sierra.

“Sierra should never have been part of your game,” John said.

He had seen everything clearly. He could indulge Pamela in some things, but she had crossed the bottom line on certain things.

“You crossed a line.”

Pamela thought that as long as she didn’t admit it, he couldn’t pin it on her. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

John simply looked at her. He did not say a word, and his eyes stayed calm, but she could barely breathe. Under his stare, she felt

the blood in her veins turn cold.

In the end, she couldn’t take the pressure. “I did plan some things with Solomon, but weren’t you the one who permitted me to do that? You agreed to let me do those things and go after her.”

“And the condition?” John asked, his voice still even.

“There couldn’t be any real harm to her or any danger to her life.” Pamela remembered it clearly, hence why she dared to agree to Solomon’s plan. “She’s safe now, right?”

John answered slowly. “You’re wrong.”

Pamela stared. “What?”

She replayed the conversation in her head.
