Everything between John and Pamela played in her mind. She couldn’t shake them off, no matter how she tried.

“You should know I never truly meant to divorce you,” John said at last, his dark eyes locked on Sierra. “Everything up to now was me going along with what you wanted.”

“I’m not in the mood for jokes.” Sierra’s expression remained serious.

“You think I’m joking?” John shot back.

Panic suddenly surged inside Sierra’s chest.

If John really refused, what could she do? Sue for divorce? Without solid proof that he cheated, it would be nearly impossible. She was undoubtedly no match for him on everything else.

“You asked me to come here, so there’s still room to talk,” Sierra said. That was the only thing she could still bet her hopes on.” Tell me what you want. What will it take for you to agree to the divorce?”

“I’m not going to,” John said flatly.

Sierra’s temper flared. “Don’t push it!”

His gaze never moved. “I know I’ll never find another Sierra Bell other than you. And I know once I let you go, you’ll never look back.”

“So what?” Sierra let out a cold laugh. “Why didn’t you think about that when you spent the night at Lakeside Villa with Pamela? Why didn’t you think about whether I would turn back when you moved your assets? Why didn’t you think about me hating you forever when you reject my worth?”

“I can explain it,” John said, calm as ever. “If you’re willing to listen.”

“It’s fine,” Sierra said, as stubborn as usual. “I don’t care how nice it sounds after all this time.”

John watched her. He seemed to understand that if he kept refusing, she might do something he could not predict.

But a divorce? That was never an option.

“Next Friday, three in the afternoon,” John said.

For a second, Sierra couldn’t process what he said. “What?”

“To get the divorce,” he repeated.

Sierra stared at him, stunned. She hadn’t expected him to fold that fast.

That did not stop her from looking at him with suspicion.

“But I have one condition.” John kept his tone calm, like he was negotiating a contract. “If Tommy wants to come to my place after the divorce, you can’t stop him. I want to take him on trips during winter and summer breaks, and you can’t interfere.”

“Alright.” Sierra agreed without hesitation. “As long as he wants to.”

“Deal,” John said.

She still didn’t trust him fully.

A moment ago, he had said he wouldn’t divorce her. Now, he was agreeing like it meant nothing

It was hard not to suspect that he was scheming something. But it she asked, he would throw it back at her and say that she couldn’t bear to leave him in the end.

Sierra shook her head. “No.”

She turned and walked out of John’s office, and headed back to her desk. Her feelings were a mess the whole way.
