Chapter 256
“If it really is John’s parents, you need to be extra careful for a while.” Holly said, worry clear in her voice. “They always do whatever it takes to get what they want. After what happened today, they probably feel humiliated and hate you for it.”
“Forget it.” Sierra was exhausted from the back–to–back concerns. “I’m just going to live my life. I’ll think about everything else after Mom wakes up.”
“If anything happens, call me anytime,” Holly said. “I’m always here.”
“Okay,” Sierra said.
“You know what? Until your mom wakes up, I’ll stay here with you just in case,” Holly said.
“There’s no need to. I can handle it,” Sierra said.
“This matter is already settled,” Holly said gleefully.
In the end, Holly wasn’t able to stay. That night, her parents called her home because something had come up. Only after she got home did she realize John had arranged it quietly.
In John’s view, Holly could give Sierra the emotional support he could not, but he believed he alone was enough when it came to protecting her.
When Sierra arrived at the office on Friday, she found there was breakfast on her desk.
One look and she recognized the pastries as the work of the Campanile Estate pastry chef, so she did not need to guess who had ordered them.
She picked up the cake, torn between tossing it straight into the trash or taking it to John. Before she could decide, Jenny’s voice came from behind her. Her expression was the same as always as she looked at Sierra.
“Mr. Henderson had that sent for you. Everyone in the office saw it.”
Sierra froze.
No wonder she could feel strange looks from her coworkers when she walked in. Now, she knew why.
After that, she calmly dropped the cake into the trash can beside her desk. Her dislike for John’s way of doing things had simply deepened.
Only Jenny saw it. No one else noticed.
Soon, it was time for the Friday meeting
Sierra sat next to Jenny as usual. Her mood, expression, and attitude were the same as any other day as she wrote down everything John assigned her to do.
Until…
“The meeting’s over,”
As soon as he announced it, everyone started gathering their things
Sierra closed her notebook and stood up.
She had barely pushed her chair back when John’s voice came again, his dark eyes fixed on her. “Sierra, stay for a moment.”
Sierra pretended not to hear him.

She wasn’t the only one here whose name sounded like that, so she refused to admit he was calling her.
“Sierra Bell.” John saw right through her and called her again. “Wait a minute. I have some work for you.”
Everyone glanced at her.
Sierra hated feeling like an animal in a zoo, being watched by everyone. She spoke up as the other staff walked out to keep people from getting the wrong idea. “What work?”
John looked around at the others, and they quickened their pace. In no time, only the two of them were left in the conference
room.
