Chapter 261
Cindy was in a full panic. She had never imagined Sierra would call the police over something so trivial. Was Sierra really not afraid of anyone finding out?
“No…” Cindy’s palms were covered in sweat, her heart pounding wildly. “I just heard it from someone else too…”
“Who told you that?” the officer asked.
.
Cindy instinctively glanced at Sierra. Sierra was as calm as ever and brushed off the look with a casual remark. “The police are talking to you. Why are you looking at me?”
“Our company’s secretary, Pamela Sanders,” Cindy finally admitted, her voice weakening as the fear caught up with her.
Pamela had only said it was something very precious. If the police pressed and she denied it, Cindy would look like she had been spreading rumors and slandering her.
Either way, Cindy knew she was finished.
In the end, Sierra, Cindy, and John were all taken to the police station to give their statements. Pamela, still in the hospital, was no exception.
Half an hour later, the four of them sat in a row at the station. Cindy sat on the far right. She instinctively leaned toward Pamela and whispered, “Ms. Sanders, is the most precious thing you mentioned about Sierra… Is it the same thing I messaged you about?”
John heard her, too. His gaze was as cold and heavy as deep water, impossible to ignore.
Pamela knew she hadn’t said anything wrong, yet she still felt uneasy. Looking puzzled, she asked, “What message?”
“The one I sent you,” Cindy pressed.
Pamela picked up her phone, saw an unread message, and said with a hint of apology, “Sorry. After I answered your last message, I was so tired I went straight to sleep.”
Cindy had no idea if that was true, but she could only accept it for now. “So, was it what I said?”
“Of course not,” Pamela said quietly. “How did you end up thinking of that?”
That one simple sentence made Cindy feel like she had just been placed on a sacrificial altar. She knew she was done for. Not only had she misunderstood Sierra, but she had also crossed John.
“You didn’t say all this in front of Sierra, did you? Is that why she called the police?” Pamela asked, sounding doubttul.
Cindy’s mouth twitched. Her hands and feet were ice–cold. “Yes.”
“You… Seriously.” Pamela paused when she reached that part. She glanced at Sierra at the far end, then lowered her voice.” Sierra’s usually quite easygoing, but she goes feral once you really cross her line.”
Cindy bit her lip as resentment rose in her chest. If Pamela had said this earlier, she never would have been stupid enough to say those things to Sierra. If Pamela hadn’t deliberately put it that way, Cindy would never have provoked Sierra. She would have kept things as they were, keeping up appearances even if Sierra disliked her.
“Apologize to her sincerely later,” Pamela added. “Il your attitude is genuine, she won’t hold it against you”
As she spoke, the officers began their questioning. As soon as the first question left their mouths, Cindy suddenly spoke up, her face a little pale.
“Officer, I misunderstood what Ms. Sanders was telling ine. I want to apologize to Ms. Bell here and now. I’m sorry.”
The officer said nothing.

“I don’t accept it,” Sierra said.
Cindy’s fists clenched, but she swallowed her feelings down. “I know I hurt you. I want to make it up to you.”
“If a simple misunderstanding and a quick sorry were enough to settle this, then the cost of spreading rumors would be too low, “Sierra said. Her voice was soft, but she did not waver. “What exactly did she say to make you misunderstand this so badly?”
“Ms. Sanders said you used something very precious to get money from Mr. Handerson for your mother’s treatment,” Cindy admitted. “I thought something else for a second there.”
