“The driver will take you,” John said.
“I don’t want the driver to. I don’t like it,” Pamela said, forcing all her emotions down. “I want you to take me. If you don’t, it means you’re not taking care of me, and if you’re not taking care of me, then you’re not keeping your promise.
John pressed his lips into a thin line.
Pamela’s confidence began to falter after being glared at like that.
From what he had said last time, she knew he would never treat her, the way he used to. Since that was the case, the only thing left to do was to drag him down with her. If she couldn’t have a good life, then no one could.
“Or do you just not care about your promises at all?” Pamela went straight for what mattered most to him. “If that’s how it is, just say it and I’ll walk away right now.”
As soon as she said that, Sierra felt John’s grip on her hand loosen. She instinctively looked at him, wondering what could have made John give Pamela any kind of promise. He wasn’t someone who made promises easily.
“You should go back first,” John said, guiding Sierra into the car and forcing his emotions down. “I’ll take her to the hospital.”
Sierra said nothing. She didn’t ask whether he had already cleared things up with Pamela. She no longer wanted to play any part in their relationship. All she wanted was to set herself free of this marriage as soon as possible.
“Make sure Sierra gets safely back to Maple Residences,” John told his driver.
“Yes, sir,” the driver answered.
The car moved ahead, then accelerated and vanished into the horizon.
Watching the empty road, Pamela couldn’t help but ask, “You gave your car to Sierra? How are you taking me back to the hospital?”
“I told Robin to send another car,” John replied calmly.
Pamela swallowed the words she had been about to say. She had thought John would glare at her, lose his temper, blame her, something
But Sierra had already been gone for more than ten minutes, and he still had not shown even a hint of anger. It was as if nothing had happened at all.
That made her wonder if he was planning to make things difficult for her in some other way.
“The doctor said I can be discharged from the hospital and rest at home,” Pamela said, forcing herself to keep talking. “Handle my discharge later, then take me back to Lakeside Villa.”
“Alright,” John replied.
He sounded very calm. So calm that it felt like he was talking to a stranger.
No matter what Pamela said or did, she could not get any reaction from him. His state made her feel like she was going crazy, yet she could not find a single mistake to hold against him.
“Do you resent me?” Pamela asked.
John glanced at her sideways.
Pamela’s hands slowly curled into fists at her sides. “I made you send me to the hospital and ruined your chance to be alone with Sierra. Don’t you hate me for that? Don’t you have a problem with me?”
“You’re my benefactor,” John answered coolly. “When you need help, I’m obliged to help.”

Pamela gave a bitter little laugh. At that moment, she finally understood the saying. He would drive you to the edge, then just stand there watching you fall apart.
“Fine. You’ll stay at Lakeside Villa after I’m discharged and take care of me,” Pamela said.
