“John’s voice was cool. “If you were in the hospital because of an accident, of course I’d take care of you. But don’t forget how you ended up there.”

The words froze Pamela in place.

Back then, she had staged the car accident on purpose to force John to choose between staying with her and being with Sierra and Tommy. He had been unhappy afterward, but he had never truly lost his temper with her.

“I’ll take care of you and give you the life you want,” John said as he laid out the terms again, this time with no hint of indulgence at all. “But only because I owe you.”

Pamela’s whole body became tense. She couldn’t win the argument, so she chose silence.

Soon, the car Robin had sent arrived, and John got in with her. No one spoke. The air in the car felt suffocating.

“Are you not coming to Lakeside Villa anymore?” Pamela broke the silence, unable to stand it.

John gave a simple answer. “It depends.”

“Go ahead,” John replied.

A hint of hope flashed in her eyes. “If you had met me first instead of Sierra, would you have treated me as well as you treated her?”

John blinked before showing a hint of suspicion in his eyes. “What?”

Pamela still didn’t realize there was a problem with what she was asking. “Is it hard to answer?”

“I only met Sierra five years ago,” John answered calmly, his voice low and cool. “If you’re talking about actually meeting each other, I met you first.”

Before he really got close to Sierra, he had always carried the memory of the girl who had saved him when he was a child.

But once he met Sierra, those childhood memories were pushed deeper and deeper away. She entered his life bit by bit until she filled it completely.

He would never fall in love with anyone but Sierra. He didn’t want to be loved by anyone but her.

“I meant after we grew up,” Pamela hurried to clarify, her heart skipping a beat. “If you had met me as an adult first, would things be different between us…”

“No. You’re not my type,” John said. He no longer bothered to sugarcoat anything and just gave her the plain truth “You could never love me the way Sierra does.”

Pamela stared at him, stunned.

Sierra was trying to divorce him, and he still thought she loved him?

“Do you even understand what love is?” she asked.

John didn’t answer.

From the outside, it looked like he was the one who loved Sierra more, spoiling her in every way for five years. Only his friends knew Sierra loved him just as deeply. Her love was even more attentive.
