“I’m not getting stuck with anything.” John said, fully aware of everything he was doing. “Somebody has to take care of this. I have to prove to them that when I give my word, I can follow through.”

“And then, what?” Lucy asked. “You keep that promise and destroy your whole family for it.”

John’s eyes grew darker and darker.

“You don’t need to prove anything to anyone. People who don’t care about promises won’t be impressed even if you keep yours. “Lucy saw it more clearly than anyone. “They won’t think you’re admirable. They’ll only think you’re foolish and too rigid.”

“I think you’re making a mistake too.” Kenneth, who almost never dared speak this directly, forced himself to go on. “Your family should come first.”

John let his gaze sweep over both their faces. “If you like lecturing so much, maybe you should change careers.”

Kenneth fell silent.

Lucy clicked her tongue.

John picked up the untouched glass of wine on the table and drank it all in one go. He set the glass down and stood up. “I have other things to do. Put it on my tab.”

He picked up his phone and suit jacket, then left the private room.

Watching him walk away, Kenneth rolled the glass between his palms and looked over at Lucy. “You’re really not going to try talking to him again?”

“It’s useless,” Lucy said, understanding the situation too well. “What happened back then hurt him too deeply. He’s obsessed with promises. We normies won’t be able to understand. He won’t listen, no matter how much we tell him.”

Kenneth frowned, his face a mix of complicated emotions.

“Are you sure Pamela is really the one who saved him when he was a kid?” Lucy couldn’t shake the feeling that something was

off.

“I’m sure.” Kenneth had asked about it before. “When he found out, he had people check again and again. Pamela has the scar she got when she saved him, and she really was at the scene at that time.”

Lucy frowned, her strikingly androgynous face impossibly handsome. “Can one person’s personality really change that much?”

As a child, Pamela had risked herself to save someone else. As an adult, she pursued her own interests above all else. No matter how much her environment had shaped her, it shouldn’t have twisted her this far.

“You’re not the only one who has thought of that. John did, too.” Kenneth leaned back on the sofa. “He even looked into Pamela’s childhood. The neighbors all said she used to be an obedient, well–behaved kid.”

“Did anyone look into her full background?” Lucy asked again.

“They weren’t getting married, so why would he go that far?” Kenneth understood John’s habits. “He only confirmed the details about the accident and the rescue.”

Lucy stood up.

Kenneth looked puzzled. “Where are you going?”

“Home. I need to check on something,” Lucy said. She raised her glass and clinked it lightly against Kenneth’s, then finished the last of the wine. “Remember to pay the bill later.”

Kenneth stared. “Didn’t John say to put it on his tab?”

Lucy didn’t answer. After she left the bar and went home, she turned on her computer and began to dig into Pamela’s history in detail.

Lucy couldn’t believe that someone who could do what Pamela had done would ever have had the courage as a child to jump into a river to save a boy who had been thrown in.

Half an hour later…

Lucy finished reading everything she could find on Pamela and couldn’t help but frown. On paper, there was nothing obviously wrong with it aside from her questionable character.
