Chapter 271

When she looked at the date of the deeds, a sense of foreboding crept over Sierra for no apparent reason.
Holly walked in. When she saw the file in Sierra’s hand, she leaned over for a look. After seeing what was inside, she casually commented, “Why does it look like a deed?”
“It’s a grant deed,” Sierra said as she set it aside and picked up the other documents on the table.
Every one of them was dated July 16.
Almost all of them were grant deeds.
She could still remember that on the day her mother had the accident, they had been shopping together. Her mother had said she wanted to talk to her about something after they got home, but they had barely pulled into the parking lot when the crash happened.
“Holly…” Sierra suddenly felt weak all over.
Holly hadn’t noticed those details. Seeing how pale Sierra looked, she asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Do you remember how my mother’s accident happened?”
The memories surged back, and Sierra didn’t dare face the suspicion taking shape in her mind.
If her mother’s crash had been deliberate, who was behind it?
Lucas?
Or someone else?
“When you two went to get the car in the parking lot, someone hit your mother because the driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake.” Holly still remembered what had happened. “Why?”
Sierra handed her the property transfer document, pointing at the date. “Look at this.”
“Sixteenth of July,” Holly read it softly, a flicker of doubt in her eyes. “This date…”
She cut herself off as something suddenly occurred to her. She looked at Sierra, her expression turning serious. “Was your mother’s accident also on this day?”
Sierra nodded. “Yes.”
Holly understood at once what she was thinking. “You suspect someone planned it?”
“I never thought about it that way before seeing all these deeds.” Sierra’s emotions were in chaos. “It’s just too much of a coincidence with the dates, so I can’t stop thinking about it.”
The young woman who had hit her mother had just gotten her driver’s license. After the crash, the girl had been even more panicked than they were, apologizing over and over. She insisted she had not done it on purpose, saying she had been too nervous and had mixed up the brake and the gas.
Her boyfriend had been there, too. When he realized she had hit someone, he kept trying to dodge responsibility and yelled at the girl.
Back then, Sierra had been focused only on her mother’s condition and calling emergency services as well as John, so she had not paid much attention to the details.
Looking back, whoever was behind it knew exactly how to use one’s psychology if it had been really planned beforehand.
She didn’t suspect anything when that happened.

“Do you want to try to find that young woman?” Holly asked. “She couldn’t afford the medical bills back then. You didn’t press criminal charges, so she should be willing to cooperate.”
“If it wasn’t an accident, she won’t cooperate.” A heavy weight in Sierra’s chest.
“Right now, it’s all just guesswork. Maybe it really was just a coincidence?” Holly said calmly. “Didn’t she stay in the hospital and help you take care of your mother for several months? If it was all planned, she wouldn’t have had the nerve to do that.”
