Chapter 272
Sierra was about to check the other rooms when she ran into Lucas on the stairs.
“Didn’t you say you weren’t coming?” Lucas had been waiting outside her neighborhood since he left her apartment.
After what he had said earlier, he was sure Sierra would come here soon, and he was right.
Sierra studied him and decided to test him. “Did you have anything to do with my mom’s car accident?”
Her dad was an open book. If he had really done it, he would have slipped up.
“Are you crazy?” Lucas snapped at her and walked inside.
He started tearing through the study, rifling through everything in sight.
As he did that, Holly shot Sierra a sidelong glance. “Should we stop him?”
“We should.” Holly took out her phone and called the bodyguards who had come with them, her gaze still on Lucas as he kept searching. “Come up to the third floor and escort Mr. Brooks downstairs. He’s in our way.”
“Understood.”
In no time, four well–trained bodyguards came upstairs. Under Lucas’s confused gaze, they grabbed him and carried him toward
the stairs.
Once he realized Sierra and Holly were throwing him out, he completely lost his composure.
“Sierra, I’m your dad! What are you doing?!” he roared.
Sierra said nothing. If she had known Lucas was following them, she would never have come today.
“If you won’t let me get my things, I’ll burn this place to the ground! I’ll make sure you have nothing left!” Lucas screamed.
“If this place really does burn down, you’ll be the first suspect. Holly and her bodyguards are all witnesses,” Sierra said.
Lucas understood. He opened his mouth, then swallowed the words he wanted to say.
What bad luck!
How could he have forgotten Holly?!
After Lucas’s brief outburst, he was taken away.
Sierra pulled up the contact information for the young woman from back then on her phone and sent her a message.
[Brenda, are you still in Jade City?]
The reply came almost instantly. [No, I’m in Harbor City.]
Sierra was just about to ask why Brenda was no longer in Jade City when Brenda called in instead. Her voice was as gentle as ever. “Hi, Sierra. You need something?”
“Just checking in.” Sierra kept her real purpose to herself. “Didn’t you live in Jade City? Why did you move to Harbor City?”
Jade City was one of the most prosperous cities in the nation, and countless people came to work. Why had Brenda gone somewhere else instead?
“My husband’s from Harbor City,” Brenda answered without hesitation. “After we got married, I moved here with him.”
“I see.” Sierra felt she had been overthinking.
The text reply had come in seconds, the call had followed right away, and her tone and manner were no different from before.

This wasn’t how someone hiding a scheme would react.
Brenda then asked with concern, “Are you sure there’s nothing you need from me?”
“No, I’m just bored, and I wanted to ask how you’re doing.” The tightness in Sierra’s chest eased a little. “That’s all, don’t worry about me. Go work on your own things now.”
“Alright. If you ever need anything, just call me. My phone is always on for you.” With that, Brenda hung up.
Staring at the dark phone screen, Sierra rubbed her temple.
She felt she had become too jumpy lately. Just because of one matching date, she had started doubting the past. If it really had been planned, the evidence would probably have been destroyed long ago.
“Let’s go, we’re heading back.” Sierra picked up the documents and left.
On the other end of the line, the ever–gentle Brenda sent a message out the moment the call with Sierra ended.
[Boss, Sierra probably suspects something. She suddenly reached out to ask how I’ve been.]
