Chapter 273
At the same time, Lucas made a call. “Everything is as planned. The result will be just the way you want it. But I wonder, about what you promised…”
“Don’t worry.” Danny’s tone was all high–and–mighty, full of disdain for Lucas. “As long as you get it done, you will receive everything I promised you.”
Lucas smiled. “Relax. I’ll get it done.”
Danny then spoke again. “If this is exposed…”
He didn’t finish the sentence, but Lucas understood at once.
Lucas took over smoothly, eager to please Danny. “This is all on me. It has nothing to do with you. No matter who asks, that’s what I will say.”
“Good.” Danny hung up.
Sierra and Holly knew nothing about any of this. After locking the villa door, they got in the car, ready to drive to school and pick up Tommy.
As soon as the engine started, Sierra’s phone lit up with a call from John. She answered without hesitation. “What is it?”
“Tommy’s belongings for Summer Camp are still at Campanile Estate. Should I bring them over, or take Tommy back here?” John’s voice was unhurried as he looked at the pile of stuff in front of him.
Sierra was just about to say he should bring them over when Holly’s voice cut in first. “Sierra.”
Sierra turned her head. “What is it?”
“Something’s wrong with the car,” Holly’s hands tightened on the steering wheel. “I just hit the brakes, and nothing happened.

“Put me on speaker.” John’s steady voice came through the phone.
Sierra tapped the screen and turned the volume up.
John gave instructions right away. “Press the brake pedal over and over and see if anything happens.”
Holly held the wheel steadily and tried a few times with her foot. “Nothing.”
“Turn on the hazard lights. Lean on the horn and warn the other drivers.”
As John spoke, there were faint sounds on his end. It was the sound of him walking. Remembering the model Holly usually drove, he added, “Pull up the electronic handbrake and keep it engaged. Let the car slow itself down.”
Sierra and Holly did exactly as he said, but nothing changed.
The speed limit on this road was one hundred. Holly had already pushed past eighty by the time she realized the brakes weren’t working.
“Has the speed come down yet?” John sent a message to Lucy, telling her to check Sierra’s location, then got into his own car and pulled out.
“No.” Holly forced herself to stay calm.
“Where are you now?” John asked. Lucy still hadn’t sent the location.
“Section Two, Jade City Avenue. It’s about ten kilometers to the next light.” Holly reported her position as she drove. “I can’t slow down. What am I supposed to do?”
