Chapter 286
Sierra lied to the middle–aged man without a second thought. “No.”
“This is my phone number.” The man took out a card with gold embossing and nothing but a string of numbers, and held it out to her. His long fingers showed no trace of age. “Contact me if you need anything.”
Sierra didn’t take it.
Were they acquainted now?
“I’m not hostile,” he said. He still held the card out to her, a faint, almost unnoticeable gentleness in his eyes.
“Jubilee said you’re my mom’s enemy,” Sierra said, using the chance to test their relationship. Her gaze stayed fixed on him, not missing the slightest change in his expression. “She told me not to have anything to do with you.”
The handsome middle–aged man simply set the card in her hand. “Don’t worry about what other people say. Just follow your own heart.”
Sierra lowered her eyes and glanced at the phone number. Then, while both of them still looked at the card, she dropped it straight into the trash can.
The man went quiet.
So did his assistant.
If Sierra really was the child Ms. K had with the boss, then his road to getting his daughter’s acknowledgment was going to be very hard indeed.
“If there’s nothing else, you can go,” Sierra said. She didn’t hesitate to side with Jubilee and her mother. They were the ones who had always been good to her. “My mom doesn’t like seeing outsiders. I hope you won’t come again.”
The man paused. He hadn’t expected to be rejected that bluntly.
“I’m not an outsider. I’m an old acquaintance of hers.”
“Old acquaintances who are truly close don’t go more than twenty years without contacting each other.” Sierra was particularly clear about such things.
The man opened his mouth, wanting to say something. When he met Sierra’s distant, unwelcoming gaze, he swallowed those words in.
“You don’t trust strangers easily. Your mom raised you well.”
Sierra didn’t answer. Whether her mom had raised her well or not was not for an outsider to judge.
He wanted to say “see you next time“, but Sierra had already turned away to stand by Anna’s bed and not give him another look. Knowing that staying would only make an already bad impression even worse, he left the hospital with his assistant.
Once they were in their car, the middle–aged man gave his assistant an order. “Look into Sierra. Find out if she was born in August or September.”
“Understood,” the assistant said.
“And arrange a paternity test between us,” he said.
She looked like him, and her temper was exactly like Anna’s. It was hard for him not to suspect she was his daughter.
“That might be a little difficult…” The assistant turned from the passenger seat, her gaze a bit complicated. “John Henderson has people protecting her from the shadows on all sides. Getting a sample from her is almost impossible.”
The man’s eyes darkened. Having a capable son–in–law wasn’t entirely a good thing.

John had no idea he was currently being disliked for being too capable. He was upstairs in an office at the hospital, watching the security camera feed from Anna’s room. He had seen every second of what happened between Sierra and the middle–aged man.
He turned toward Lucy and asked, “Did you find anything?”
Lucy rested her head on one hand.
John waited.
“My mentor has locked down his information, too,” Lucy replied lazily.
“Consider yourself free from having to look into Sierra’s mom,” John said, his gaze steady on her with a seriousness. “But I want this man’s basic information, and I want it within half an hour at most.”
Lucy’s fingers slid across the keyboard. She could definitely do that.
But once she pulled this man up, John would be able to follow the trail straight back to Anna being her mentor. That would mean she would ruin her mentor’s entire setup.
“I won’t use his trail to investigate Anna,” John said, starting in on his usual tactics.
