“If I hadn’t told her, she wouldn’t have handed you over to me,” John answered slowly, every word measured and reasonable.” If she hadn’t given you to me, I would have had to go down and knock on your suite’s door. Then she wouldn’t be the only one in the know.”
Sierra wanted to argue, but what he did was fine from a certain angle.
“If your head is still spinning, you should sleep a little longer,” John said as he glanced at his watch. “I told Leona that if anyone asks about you, she should say a friend came to get you, and you went to her place.”
“Why did you call me here?” Sierra walked over and sat down on a chair, going straight to the point.
“We never finished talking about that last matter.” John sat on the couch in front of her, his gaze unreadable. “I want to have a proper talk with you.”
He had thought about bringing it up back in Jade City, but Sierra never gave him the chance. As soon as she finished work, she would go home and lock the door behind her, shutting him out completely.
“There is nothing to talk about.” Sierra knew exactly what he meant. She was firm with this. “You were so decisive when you signed. You should be just as decisive now.”
“I was only going along with what you wanted. I was just trying to indulge you,” John said.
“That wasn’t indulging me.” Sierra’s mind was very clear, and her words cut straight through him. “You just want to see me mess up my life without you, fall flat on my face, then come crawling back to you so you can feel satisfied and feel good about yourself.”
John pressed his lips.
Sierra gave him her answer in a steady tone. “But I’m doing very well now. I can live a happy life even without you.”
“Are you really happy?” John asked,
“Yes,” Sierra replied.
“If you were, you wouldn’t have clung to me and broken down crying last time,” John said, going straight for Sierra’s weak spot. “You wouldn’t have gone to the hospital every day to see your mother just to find someone to hold on to.”
Sierra froze, and a flicker of emotion passed through her eyes.
Everyone else thought she went to the hospital out of duty, but only she knew that the real reason she went was to find some kind of support other than hoping her mother would wake up soon. Her quiet murmuring there every day had become the way she let out the pressure.
“I owe Pamela a favor, and I promised I would support her for the rest of her life,” John said, taking the initiative to explain and trying to settle things calmly “Other than that, there is nothing between us.”
“What does that have to do with me?” Sierra shot back.
John’s gaze darkened. “I want to talk this through. You can bring up any conditions you want.”
“From the beginning to the end, I only have one condition,” Sierra said, her tone unshaken “Divorce ”
“You know that’s impossible,” John said quietly
“Then there is nothing to talk about,” Sierra said.

Silence fell between them.
They stared at each other, neither backing down. The atmosphere turned cold, one stubborn and refusing to yield, while the other was silent and refusing to compromise.
After a long time, John stood up, his attitude colder than before. “Use the next few days to think about what you want. When the divorce application cancels itself, I’ll bring you and Tommy back to Campanile Estate.”
“On what grounds?” Sierra stood up as well.
“On the grounds that you are my wife and Tommy is my son. We are a family, and we should live together,” John said with absolute certainty. “If you don’t want to go back to Campanile Estate, I can move to Maple Residences and squeeze into that small apartment with you.”
