“I’ve already screamed in my head a few times,” Sierra said.

She meant every word. When someone was that happy, words never seemed to be enough to express what they were really feeling.

From the moment she heard Holly’s news, Sierra’s heart hadn’t settled for a second. She didn’t know how to put it into words.

All she knew was that her mom was coming back.

“It’s fine. If I were you, I probably wouldn’t know how to react either,” Holly said, understanding Sierra. “Anna is about to wake up and recover. Tommy will be starting primary next year. Do you have any plans?”

Sierra thought for a moment and said, “I want to leave Jade City.”

Out in the hallway, John leaned against the wall outside the break room. His eyes darkened, and a chill spread through him.

“John has no intention of divorcing me right now.” Sierra finally had the courage to say it. “I don’t want to see him with Pamela at all. The only way is to leave.”

If she had to, Tommy could always study in a private school. After high school, he could go abroad. The residency paperwork would solve itself.

“With what John could do, he could find you even if you ran to the ends of the earth,” Holly said sincerely. “But judging by the way your mom transferred those assets, she wasn’t a simple woman herself. Maybe she knew a way out.”

“I’ll wait until she wakes up.” Sierra had already started planning things out the night before. “She’ll still need time for rehab before she can move around like normal. That gives me enough time to get everything ready.”

A cool voice cut in without warning. “You think so?”

Sierra jumped. Her phone almost slipped from her hand. She turned and saw John standing there, cold and distant, staring at her. His eyes were as black as ink, full of threat. That darkness looked like it could swallow her whole.

Her heart clenched. Fear rose in her before she could stop it.

Holly didn’t hear him and kept talking. “Makes sense. Well… Get back to work, then. I’ll go check on your mom again.”

“Okay.” Sierra’s answer came out weak.

Holly was focused on Anna and didn’t think too much about it. She just assumed Sierra was working overtime and couldn’t talk loudly, and then hung up,

The break room fell into pin–drop silence,

Sierra and John stared at each other across a few yards of empty space. One guilty and afraid, the other cold and hard.

“I thought you’d have seen how much I care about you by now,” John said, his voice was colder than usual. His calm tone carried a threat that made people uneasy, “But you still want to leave.”

“Is it wrong for me to want to leave?” Sierra didn’t know where the courage came from, but she met him head–on.

John started walking toward her. Every step felt like it landed on her heart, filling her with dread and pante.

His lips opened just enough to let two words slip out. “It’s wrong. ”

Sierra was about to argue when John crowded in and forced her back against the wall, looking down at her. “I’m never your first choice. You never choose me without the slightest doubt.”

“Before you pin the blame on me, maybe think about what you did first,” Sierra shot back. Even so, his words made her fall silent for a second. “If you weren’t set on taking care of Pamela for the rest of her lite, I never would have left.”

John pressed his lips and said nothing. His eyes were cold and dark as the midnight sky.
