Chapter 301

“You should head back first,” Sierra said, forcing every last trace of emotion out of her mind until all that remained was the task her mentor had assigned her. “I’m staying at the office tonight.”
Leona wanted to talk her out of it, but Sierra spoke before she could.
“We came here on behalf of Origin Games. If we don’t even finish the work they gave us, it will hurt the company’s reputation.”
“But if you don’t rest, how are you supposed to work and learn tomorrow?” Leona sounded worried.
“I should be done around four or five in the morning.” Sierra checked the time and gave herself a rough schedule. “I can still grab a little sleep.”
Leona still wanted to say something, but Sierra gently steered her away and sent her off.
The mess had started because of Sierra’s mistake. She wasn’t about to make anyone else carry it with her.
Ten minutes later, the whole office building was empty except for her.
She turned off every light in the company and left only a single desk lamp on.
Maybe she had been pushed too hard. Maybe she was just afraid to drag the company name. She just switched gears and went all -in on the work, leaving her previous feelings behind without even thinking about it.
Only then did she realize that the line she had seen online was actually true. People who worked for a living couldn’t afford the time to be sad. They cried their eyes out at night, and then they pulled themselves together and went to work the next day.
Over the next few hours, Sierra focused on the task with everything she had. She didn’t want anyone thinking she only got the job because of John.
She didn’t want John telling her she was worthless.
She could stand on her own feet and support herself.
She had the basic ability to survive.
While Sierra worked overtime downstairs, John waited upstairs. Only their two floors still had a faint glow of light in the entire building. Everywhere else was pitch black.
A little after four forty in the morning, Sierra finally finished the draft.
She saved the final file, shut down the computer, then took her phone and purse to the break room. She set an alarm for eight, curled up on one of the couches, and went to sleep.
Her emotions were still worn, and her body was exhausted from work. She fell asleep not long after she lay down. Her breathing slowly evened out, and as it did, the door of the break room opened.
John walked in.
He was wearing a white shirt, and his perfectly shaped features carried a trace of fatigue.
Noticing how warm the break room was, he turned on the air conditioning and set it to a comfortable temperature. He took the suit jacket from his arm and put it on her to keep her warm.
When he had finished all of that, he sat down beside her, his gaze tracing every inch of her face.
He didn’t understand why she had to be so stubborn.
If she stayed with him, she wouldn’t need a job. She wouldn’t need to stay up all night.
She could do whatever she liked. She wouldn’t need to grind herself down like this for a little money.

“Why won’t you just behave for once?” John murmured, a dull tightness pressing in his chest. “You insist on taking on pain you never needed to bear.”
Sierra slept deeply and had no idea he was there or what he had said.
At seven fifty–five in the morning, John woke up first.
