Chapter 303
Sierra froze.
She felt as if someone had slammed something heavy into her chest.
“I’m sorry.” She thought of how sharp her words had just been. They were indeed quite hurtful.
“I don’t want your apology.” John fixed his gaze on her. “I want you to come back. As long as you come back, I’ll let you have your way with everything. I won’t mind at all, even if you say hurtful things to me every single day.”
The pressure in Sierra’s chest grew worse.
John loved openly and indulged without limits, but he was also merciless when he decided to be vindictive.
Ding!
The elevator opened.
John took her to his room. Because of what had just happened, the air between them was quiet and heavy. The atmosphere of the entire room became heavy.
“Why do you have to support Pamela for the rest of her life?” Sierra knew she was not getting away, so she might as well ask what had been bothering her. “What is this favor you keep talking about?”
“She saved my life,” John answered.
He had planned to wait until she came back to his side before telling her.
The fact that she was willing to ask in a moment like this meant she was backing down a little. Since she was willing to take that step, he had no reason to keep hiding the reason.
“If she saved your life, you could just give her money and help her fulfill a few wishes.” Sierra raised her eyes to him, not able to understand it fully. “Do you really need to keep her by your side and live with her? To support her for your entire life?”
John pressed his lips.
Emotion stirred in his eyes, dark as night. “Because I promised I would take care of her.”
This time, Sierra truly couldn’t comprehend it.
A promise.
A promise again.
“Why are you so obsessed with promises?” she asked.
For the first time, she ignored his mood and pushed. She had never questioned it before this, because he clearly hadn’t wanted to talk about it. Now that both sides were willing to put their cards on the table, she wanted it all laid out clearly once and for all.
Sierra respected that everyone had their own secrets.
But when a secret started to affect the relationship and feelings between two people, it had to be brought into the open.
This time, John didn’t answer.
He refused to speak about the past.
“If you want a real conversation, then tell me.” Sierra gave him one last chance. This was also going to be the last time she was willing to talk to him about this in earnest. “I need to know why.”
“You’d never bring this up in the past,” John said as he looked at her differently now. His voice was lower than usual. Before

Sierra could say anything, he added, “Can’t you stay with me just because you simply love me?”
“I want to.” Sierra’s chest felt tight and filled with anxiety. “But after everything you’ve done and said, how am I supposed to love you? If you were in my place, could you still love me?”
“I can,” John said, his answer was firm.
He then walked toward her, step by step. Then he stopped right in front of her, his deep eyes locked on hers.
“As long as you keep on telling me you love me, my heart won’t change even if you throw my pride and dignity into the dirt.”
Sierra’s heart clenched.
The pressure from before turned into little blades, stabbing through her chest again and again. They were so sharp it hurt to breathe.
“But I’m not you.” Her words cut into both of them at the same time. “Just like how I’m able to share every detail of my past, but you can’t.”
