John made that decision at that moment.

“Use kids‘ makeup to make his skin look like he just had an allergic reaction again.” He told the medical team, his voice low and steady. “Make his lips look pale and spray some water on his forehead.”

“Forget it. I’m not quitting this job.” Sierra grabbed the agreement as she got emotional. “There’s no term on here that says I can’t work.”

If she quit, he could then throw it in her face that everything she ate, used, and wore was paid for by him the next time they fought. She would have nothing to say back to him.

She wasn’t going to fall into the same place twice.

It was enough for her to suffer that kind of humiliation once in her lifetime.

“If you really like it, I won’t force you to quit.” John didn’t realize that one line he had once said on purpose to corner her had stayed stuck in her heart like a thorn. “That’s your freedom.”

Sierra threw the agreement back at him.

John felt his heart slowly grow warm again when she watched her temper flare. She was still the same woman who got mad at him in the past. The only difference now was that she didn’t like him as much.

“It’s late. Go to sleep.” John told her.

Right then, he completely forgot that to Sierra, Tommy was still in the emergency room. That was the last bit of information she had about him.

Hearing how relaxed he sounded, Sierra felt a fresh wave of disappointment. “Do you even have a heart?”

John lifted his eyes. “What?”

“Tommy is still in the emergency room, and you can think about sleeping?” Sierra was angrier than she had been when she found out about him and Pamela. “Are you even really his father?”

John raised a hand and pressed his fingers to his temple.

He had forgotten about the lie.

“Wait a second.” He stood up, took his phone, and walked over to the floor–to–ceiling window to call the hospital director. “Is it done?”

The director looked at the clean and healthy boy and gave an honest answer. “It is.”

“Call me in ten minutes and repeat what you told me half an hour ago.” John wanted Sierra to stay in the dark. He didn’t want her to find out the truth. “Wipe his face clean. All the water and the makeup need to be cleared.”

The director agreed to everything. “Of course.”

John made a quiet hum and hung up.

Sierra was still angry with him, but she was even more worried about Tommy. “How is he?”

“He’s already out of danger. They’re finishing things up now,” John did not break a sweat as he lied with ease. “You don’t need to worry as much.”
