Sierra looked puzzled, but she began to grow somewhat suspicious because of Tommy’s line of questioning.

“Last night, Dad called me and said he had made you angry.” Tommy thought about what happened in his mind, trying to recall everything. “Is that why you were upset?”

“No,” Sierra said.

She didn’t want Tommy to know about how his own father didn’t care whether he lived or died. That fact alone could traumatize any child. Tommy should grow up healthy and happy.

Tommy fixed his gaze on John, stubbornly waiting for an answer.

John flicked Tommy’s forehead and asked, “Do you really dislike seeing your mom and me get along?”

“You must have used some scheme to force Mom to come back,” Tommy said. He refused to believe one business trip could fix everything.

“If schemes and tricks alone were enough to bring your mom back, do you think she would’ve ever had the chance to leave?” John’s voice was low and calm. “Give me the suitcase and go wash up for breakfast.”

Tommy still felt something was off, but since his mom didn’t deny it, he knew the real reason wasn’t something he could figure out in a few guesses.

At breakfast, Sierra’s expression was calm, like a robot. It was as if nothing had happened at all. Everything looked calm on the

surface.

“I’m going to the hospital to see your grandma later,” Sierra said to Tommy after she finished eating. “Do you want to stay home and read? Or do you want to come with me?”

“I’ll go with you.” Tommy wanted to

close to her, and Sierra didn’t refuse.

She was about to bring it up with John when he started the conversation first. “I’ve already asked Grant to get the cars ready. All the keys are where they used to be. You can drive out whenever you want.”

“Sure,” Sierra said. She kept her tone as neutral as possible. She didn’t want to give John any attitude with Tommy watching.

“I have something I need to deal with this afternoon, so I won’t be going with you.” John was still thinking about Lucas. “Call

me if anything comes up.”

“Alright.” Sierra’s reply was faint.

Half an hour later…

Both Sierra and Tommy left for the hospital.

Only after he watched their car pull away did John call Forde and Lance over. “Where’s Lucas?”

“At the manor in the countryside to the south,” Lance answered. “He’s been really enjoying his food. He put on four pounds over the last two days!”

John wasn’t sure what to say.

He went over. When he arrived, Lucas was in the living room watching television, surrounded by good wine, fruit, and all kinds of refreshments. One could describe him as living a good life.

“How have you been?” John walked in.

“Pretty good, except…” Lucas answered immediately without thinking.

His words cut off when he saw John.

He shot up from the couch at once, eyes full of wariness. “What are you doing here?!”

“This is my building. Why do you think I’m here?” John replied.

“No way! This is your dad’s place!” Lucas argued on reflex. His eyes finally took in Forde and Lance standing behind John. “They can back me up!”

John gave them a side eye.

“Sir!” Forde and Lance answered in unison.

Lucas stared, then took a few steps back without thinking.

If he still couldn’t see that this had been a trap all along, then he really was an idiot. He felt a chill in his chest.

“So this was all a setup?” he asked, shuddering.

“It was obviously our boss’s trap.” Lance stepped forward, his eyes stern. “You really are clueless. You actually believed us when all we did was say we worked for Danny. You’re a grown man, but you have no common sense at all.”

Lucas was speechless.
