Chapter 320

“I know none of you healthcare workers work like that,” Sierra said with quiet sincerity. “Whenever a patient needs treatment, you always find a way to contact their family. I want to know why no one called me last night.”
The hospital had her number on file and knew exactly what she was to Tommy. Even if John had forbidden them to treat him, they should have called her. The fact that no one did was an obvious hole.
“No one’s brave enough to go against Mr. Henderson,” Dr. Smith said as he adjusted his wording. “The hospital belongs to him. All of us work for him.”
“I understand.” Sierra didn’t press him, but she knew she wouldn’t get anything more even if she pushed.
She was going to leave with a heavy weight in her chest.
When she was at the doorway, Dr. Smith suddenly called out, “Ms. Bell.”
Sierra looked back over her shoulder.
“Mr. Henderson is a very good man,” Dr. Smith said. “Some things may look wrong on the surface or make you angry, but his heart is in the right place.”
“If you leave a child in danger and refuse to treat him, I don’t see anything good in that,” Sierra said. She walked away as soon as she finished.
She went back to Anna’s ward, said a few brief words to Holly and Tommy, then left the hospital together. She was just about to ask Holly where they should meet later that evening when John’s car pulled up in front of them.
“Done seeing your mom?” John got out and walked over.
“Yeah.” Sierra’s voice was nonchalant.
He took her hand. “Come on, let’s go home.”
Sierra didn’t move.
John asked her with patience and gentleness, “What is it?”
“I need to talk to Holly about something. I’ll go back later,” Sierra said, wanting to take a walk and get some fresh air. With her being so tense, she would easily affect Tommy. “You take Tommy home first.”
John glanced at Holly, who was staring at the two of them like the world she knew had become something else.
He agreed without a second thought. “Alright, text me when you’re heading back. I’ll have someone pick you up.”
He wasn’t afraid of her talking to Holly about last night. Even if it had all been a show he put on, he had done it. If she needed someone to talk to so that she could get it off her chest, he understood.
No matter what Sierra said to Holly, she would not be able to leave him in the short term.
“We’ll see.” Sierra pulled her hand out of his hand and said a quick word to Tommy before getting into Holly’s car. “Let’s go.”
Holly’s was full of questions, but she held them back. “Sure.”
The car sped away, leaving only Tommy and John behind.
Tommy’s face was full of unhappiness, and his tone was anything but polite. “What did you do to make her this angry?”
“Get in the car,” John said plainly.
Tommy dug his heels in, wanting an answer. “Tell me first.”

John picked him up and put him in the car. “This is between adults. Kids like you don’t need to know. What you do need to know is that starting today, you should be calling me Dad.”
“What did you say, Uncle John?” Tommy did it on purpose.
