After midnight, Sierra woke up hungry.
When she saw the empty bed, she didn’t think much of it and went downstairs to find something to eat.
As soon as she reached the bottom of the stairs, she saw John waiting at the dining table. Several steaming dishes were already set out in front of him.
“Come eat.” John pulled a chair out for her. He had clearly calculated that she would wake up hungry at this hour and come looking for food. “I made everything the way you like your dinner. It won’t make you gain weight.”
Sierra glanced at him without saying a word, her eyes falling on the colorful, fragrant dishes.
John eased her into the chair and then put some food onto her plate. After that, he slipped the fork into her hand. “Eat.”
The food was delicious, but Sierra ate absentmindedly. She almost wished he would go back to being as cold as he had been not long ago. That would make it easier for her to make decisions and to be ruthless.
But now…
Now that everything was out in the open, he had gone back to being as gentle and attentive as he had been through their five years of marriage. Her emotions were all over the place.
“Not to your taste?” John asked when he saw how every bite seemed hard for her to swallow.
Sierra said, “No.”
Forget it. She would wait.
She wouldn’t make any moves until Anna woke up. Until then, she would play along with his requests, letting him believe she
would not leave.
Then, she would take her mother and son away when his guard was down. Once she went back to work, they wouldn’t be seeing much of each other anyway.
John saw she was thinking things over and decided to leave her alone. Everyone had things they didn’t want to talk about. If she didn’t want to say anything, he would not push.
“Go for a walk outside before you go back up to sleep.” He reminded her softly when he saw she had finished eating. His hand had already held hers. “Let’s go.”
Sierra was just about to say she would go by herself when his phone rang.
It was Pamela.
They both saw the name.
John’s expression didn’t change. He answered as if it were the most ordinary call in the world
“John, I slipped in the shower just now,” Pamela said. “It hurts so much, and I can’t get up. Can you come over for a bit?
“I’ll call the doctor and the maid,” John said calmly
“I want you to come,” Pamela replied
A barely visible flicker of light appeared in his eyes.
It was already over between them, and Pamela no longer cared whether he realized she was doing it on purpose. She had really fallen, but she didn’t bother to hide that she wanted him there.
“You don’t want to come?”

“I’ll be there in an hour,” John said, then hung up.
He put his phone away and gave Sierra’s hand a light squeeze. Without the slightest hint of guilt or apology, he said, “I’m going over there for a bit. If anything comes up while I’m out, call me.”
“Once you’re gone, don’t ever come back,” Sierra said, pulling her hand out of his.
John put his hand on the back of her head and brushed a kiss across her forehead. “Behave.”
Then, he left.
He didn’t hesitate and didn’t look back.
Watching John walking away, Sierra became even more certain she couldn’t stay with him. She couldn’t accept that one phone call from Pamela would pull him away, or that he would put Pamela ahead of her and Tommy.
She understood paying back a debt of kindness.
