After a moment, the sound of running water came through the line. Sierra heard Pamela knock on a door and call out, “John, Sierra called to ask why you terminated her part–time job. What should I tell her?”

Sierra didn’t feel much of anything. She knew Pamela was doing it on purpose. John kept saying there was nothing between them, yet he was taking a shower at Pamela’s place.

No matter how she looked at it, something was off.

“Maybe he can’t hear me over the water. When he finishes, I’ll tell him,” Pamela said when there was no response from inside.

Sierra stayed silent. She was about to hang up when Pamela spoke again. “Aren’t you curious why John is showering at my place?

Sierra’s reply was flat. “Not interested.”

“We had a little accident this morning,” Pamela said, putting a shy note in her voice. “He got some of my…liquid on him. You know how clean he is. As soon as we were done, he went to shower.”

If it were right after the divorce, words like that would have made Sierra furious. Her mind would have gone straight back to the day she asked for the divorce. She would have doubted everything and decided there was something improper between them.

But John had told her very clearly that what he had with Pamela was nothing more than a debt of gratitude and nothing else.

Sierra still couldn’t understand the way he handled it, but she didn’t really believe he would sleep with Pamela.

“You left out a few words,” Sierra said. She already had a pretty good idea.

“What words?” Pamela asked.

“It should be that he got some of the liquid from your glass on him,” Sierra said. “You spilled it on him. He hated the sticky feel and the smell, so he went to wash it off.”

Pamela fell quiet. Her brows furrowed together. She hadn’t expected Sierra to see through it so easily.

She had done it on purpose, of course, pretending to spill some fruit juice on him so she could call Sierra while John was in the shower and say things that would make Sierra misunderstand her. She just hadn’t expected that Sierra would be the one to call first before she could make the call.

“Tell him to call me when he’s done,” Sierra said before hanging up. She then told the driver to head for the hospital.

Sierra hadn’t reached the hospital yet when Jubilee called to say she was back and wanted to see her. Thirty minutes later, they met at a restaurant across the street from the hospital.

As soon as Sierra walked in, she saw Jubilee in a red dress, charming and full of energy, waving hard and calling out, “Over here, my sweet little baby! Here!”

Sierra hurried over and hugged Jubilee tight.

“My, you’ve lost so much weight!” Jubilee said after looking her over. “When your mother wakes up and sees you like this, you’ll shatter her heart.”

Sierra smiled. “And you’re still as beautiful as ever.”

Jubilee lit up with delight. “That mouth of yours is still as sweet as always. Come on, give me a kiss.”

Sierra lifted a hand at once to block her. When Jubilee went in for a kiss, she meant it for real. Back when Anna was still awake, Jubilee had tried to kiss her all the time, too..
