“Haven’t I already told you about her stories?” Jubilee didn’t give anything away, sounding completely serious. “Before she turned eighteen, your mom practically grew up in an orphanage. After that, she worked her way through college.”
“Who can earn that much money just from part–time jobs?” Sierra shot back.
“My bestie can,” Jubilee said, propping her chin up with one hand.
Sierra fell silent.
“Don’t doubt it,” Jubilee said, looking completely sincere. “Your mom’s an incredible woman. If she were the same age as John, your man might not even be able to beat her.”
“Then why did she choose my dad?” Sierra asked, her tone very serious.
With that eye for detail and that level of abilities, there was no way her mom could not see a man’s true nature.
Something was definitely off.
“Well…” Jubilee pressed her lips, caught off guard by how precisely the question was. “You can’t win in both career and love, you know? She’s too successful in her career, so of course she’s not as sharp when it comes to people.”
“If Mom really is as amazing as you say, she wouldn’t have chosen to marry my dad,” Sierra said, her mind sharper than ever. Grandpa and Grandma didn’t exactly approve of her back then, either.”
Given all that, for someone successful, kind, principled, and good–looking to choose such a hard road… She had to be really out of her mind.
Jubilee said nothing.
“Their marriage always felt more like a partnership,” Sierra went on.
Her parents had signed a prenuptial agreement in advance, and all property was kept separate during the marriage. Not to mention the way they interacted day to day…
Sierra used to think her parents got along well and were very loving. Looking back now, their relationship had been a little too steady. So steady, it felt like a carefully maintained performance.
“Oh, that’s nonsense!” Jubilee muttered, starting to sweat.
“Are you keeping quiet because Mom told you not to say anything? Or did she tell some other good friend and just not you?” Sierra asked smoothly. “If it is the second one, I won’t push you. You’ll feel bad every time I bring this up.”
“What other friends?” Jubilee snapped. That wasn’t something she would take lying down. “She doesn’t have any! I’m her one and only best friend!”
“Sure, of course,” Sierra said, sounding completely nonchalant.
“You don’t believe me?” Jubilee demanded.
.” Sierra sounded perfectly sincere.
“I believe you.”
“Your face says you don’t,” Jubilee grumbled. She was reminiscent and finally let a little slip. “Back in the day, she was just too amazing. She stole everyone else’s spotlight, and they were all jealous of her. I was the only one who held tight to her.”
“Who exactly are you talking about?” Sierra asked.
“People in the circle,” Jubilee answered casually.
Sierra opened a photo on her phone and held it out. “Does that include him?”

Jubilee glanced without thinking. The moment she saw Nathan, her brows furrowed the slightest bit, but her expression went back to normal in an instant.
“Why do you still have his photo?” she asked. “Didn’t I tell you he’s not a good man, and you should stay away from him?”
“I met him,” Sierra said honestly. “He even gave me his card.”
Jubilee straightened at once. “You kept it?”
