Chapter 333
“Sir,” Lance said as he walked beside him. “Are you really going in without buying anything first? No one will accept an apology when you show up empty–handed.”
“Shut up.” John cut him off.
Lance fell silent at once.
When they reached the ward, John told him to wait outside and went in alone.
Sierra thought Jubilee had come back, so she turned toward the sound of the door opening. “What took you so long? Is it…”
Her sentence just stopped when she saw John. The friendliness on her face vanished in an instant, replaced by distance and
annoyance.
John still had the nerve to walk over and ask, “How is she?”
“She’s alright,” Sierra answered indifferently.
“Pamela spilled some fruit juice on me this morning,” John explained. “I hate that smell and the sticky feeling, so I went to take a shower. I left my phone in the bedroom. I didn’t think she’d go in.”
“I don’t care what happened between you and her.” Sierra forced her feelings back down and glared at him. “I just want to know why you decided to terminate my part–time job for me without asking.”
“They only hired you because they wanted to use you,” John said. “If you like this job, I can help you find someone else who’ll employ you.”
That statement was like lighting a fuse and striking a nerve with Sierra. She immediately stood up. “Help me?”
John sensed the shift in her mood.
Sierra’s anger surged higher. “Do you think I can’t find a job on my own? Or do you think I can’t live without you?!”
“Neither.” John held her gaze. “I just want you to have an easier life.”
The words that were about to leave Sierra’s mouth were forced back down into her throat.
See?
It was always like this.
He kept bringing up her sore points while being oblivious about it, and then justified it by saying it was for her own good.
From the outside, she was the one who looked unreasonable and ungrateful.
Yet, he was the one who had denied her worth in the first place, the one who had said she was not worth anything. That thorn had been buried in her heart all this time and had never been pulled out.
“If there’s anything wrong, you can tell me.” John took her hand, his voice low and steady.
The calmer he was, the more Sierra’s emotions swung out of control. Had everything she had said so many times before been for nothing?
“If you really can’t let go of that job with the Lane family, I can put in a word with Eagon,” John went on.
He never really thought things through regarding this. To him, his earnings were meant for Sierra to spend. If she had to go to work, then she must be suffering.
He didn’t want her to suffer.

He wanted her life to be easy and carefree.
The old Sierra might have settled with that.
But after being told she had no value, after the transfer of marital assets and everything that had happened, she couldn’t do that
anymore.
She had started to believe that only when she had control over her own finances and talents would her heart be able to calm down, even if the money she earned was very insignificant and not even one ten–millionth of his earnings.
“Do you really think this is about work?” Sierra shot back, a knot of anger in her chest. “Quitting my job on my behalf without asking me is disrespectful. Telling me repeatedly that I don’t need to work is denying my value. You’re the president of Henderson Group. You’re worth tens of billions. It’s only natural for you to look down on the meager amount I make.”
