Chapter 357
Dr. Smith stared after him, baffled.
That was it?
Just an “I see“?
John said nothing more.
He left the ward and went up to his office on the top floor. Sitting in his chair, he looked out through the tall window at the traffic below, the air around him colder than ever.
He called Robin and gave the latter his instructions, then went over a few things to keep an eye on with Kenneth. Only then did he call Lucy.
“What is it?” Lucy’s tone was light and casual.
“Your teacher woke up,” John said.
Lucy paused.
“Are you coming to see her?” John asked.
“In a way, we’re just friends online.” Lucy leaned back in her chair, calm. “After so many years, who knows if she even remembers having a student like me.”
“So what if she remembers, so what if she doesn’t,” John replied.
“You didn’t call just for small talk,” Lucy pointed out, her voice as lazy as ever.
John got straight to the point. “If Anna wants to take Sierra away, which side will you take?”
Lucy drew out her answer. “Well…”
John didn’t rush her. He waited.
“It depends on my mood,” Lucy said. “If I feel alright about you, I won’t take sides and stay neutral. If I don’t feel that great about you, then I’ll stand with my teacher and repay her for what she taught me.”
John answered with a quiet “Got it” and hung up.
He understood.
Lucy wouldn’t openly help anyone, but if it came to it, she might still tip Anna off about his plans.
The call had just ended when Pamela’s name flashed on his screen again. She had already made countless calls that night.
John looked at her name, thought it over, and finally picked up. “What is it?”
For the next few days, John never showed up at the hospital. Sierra didn’t think much of it. She was busy helping Anna with her rehab every day and had no time to worry about anything else.
As for work, she had taken a week off, all so she could stay with Anna.
Even though Anna told Sierra that she could manage fine in the hospital, Sierra still insisted on being there.
Her mom had finally woken up. She could not bear the thought of leaving Anaa alone to do those repetitive exercises. She wanted to go through them with her mom.

Anna’s condition improved quickly. She could talk almost normally with them, no longer struggling for every word. She could also manage many movements now, though anything that took strength and real effort was still a little difficult.
On Friday, after Anna finished her rehab exercises, Dr. Smith came into the ward to give Sierra an update. “Your mother is recovering extremely well. Most people wouldn’t see this kind of progress in just a few days. It comes from her excellent health.
The good news made Sierra genuinely happy.
“We originally estimated a month before she could walk like a normal person,” Dr. Smith went on. “At this rate, it should take a little more than two weeks.”
Sierra froze.
A little more than two weeks…
Today was the fifth of July. If they didn’t get the divorce certificate by the twelfth, the application would be withdrawn automatically.
Seven days.
There was no way John would let her go in seven days. If she brought it up now, there was no telling whether he would tamper with her mother’s treatment.
“Ms. Sierra?” Dr. Smith raised his voice to call her.
