“I’m thinking about what to do about the divorce.”

Sierra didn’t hide it from Anna. Right now, she was just a child with an adult to lean on.

“The divorce application is going to be withdrawn automatically soon. If we don’t get it finalized and get the certificate before that, we’ll have to submit a new application.”

Given the way John was now, he definitely wouldn’t file the application with her again. Even if he did, another month was enough time for all kinds of changes.

“Divorce application, automatic withdrawal?”

For the first time, those words sounded strange to Anna. She had always thought you just brought the right documents and got them done.

Sierra was about to explain it to Anna when she suddenly remembered that when her mother fell into a coma, the law about the waiting period still hadn’t taken effect as it was something new.

She briefly went over the current marriage regulations, then carefully explained what the cooling–off period was.

By the time she finished, the calm on Anna’s face had given way to complete confusion. She clearly didn’t understand the law.

“The application between us will be withdrawn in seven days,” Sierra said, worry pressing down on her chest. “I’m afraid…”

“It’s alright.” Anna was almost fifty, yet her face was still remarkably well–maintained. “If it gets withdrawn, I’ll find someone to help you take him to court. I promise you’ll get out of this marriage.”

Sierra probed her carefully. “John has a top legal team.”

“It’s alright. I do too,” Anna answered.

Sierra blinked in surprise.

“When I fully recover, I’ll help you take care of this,” Anna said, holding Sierra’s hand and steadying her. “You just need to live the way you truly want to.”

“Alright.” For the first time in days, Sierra felt at ease.

After a while, Sierra called to her softly when she saw Anna lost in thought. “Mom.”

“Yes?” Anna turned to her.

“You and Jubilee aren’t orphans, are you?” Sierra asked.

“No.” Anna no longer hid it from her. “I’ll tell you the details slowly later. Right now, you only need to remember that no matter what kind of background I have, I’m the one who loves you the most.”

Anna had kept all those things from Sierra in the past because she wanted her daughter to grow up carefree, but Sierra had been through a lot during the divorce.

“About you and Lucas?” Sierra asked.

“We both got what we needed from each other,” Anna said. “He wanted to secure his career. I needed a marriage to get Nathan and the others to drop certain ideas. We were honest with each other, drew up an agreement, then got the certificate.”

Sierra nodded, finally understanding what was going on. No wonder Lucas had spent so little time with them.

She remembered him as being sweet to her mom and good to them both, but he was just never home much because of his job. Now, everything made sense.
