John frowned.
Lucy walked over and patted his shoulder. “Don’t let things get too tense when there’s still time to fix this. Talk things through with Sierra and stop charging ahead on your own like a bull.”
“You do the same thing, too,” John countered.
Lucy paused. “What?”
He looked at her for a while, then swallowed the words that had almost come out. “Nothing.”
“Think it through yourself.” Lucy didn’t bother to figure out what he was implying. She only hoped he would talk to Sierra properly. “I’m going to meet my mentor in person now.”
John reminded her, “Don’t say anything you shouldn’t.”
Lucy waved a hand as she headed out. “That depends on how I feel.”
When Lucy reached the ward, Sierra and Holly were chatting with Anna about Tommy. The atmosphere inside was warm and lively.
Lucy raised her hand and knocked on the door. “Am I interrupting anything?”
Everyone looked over.
Sierra recognized her first. “Lucy?”
Lucy smiled. “Can I come in?”
“Of course.” Sierra stood up, her gaze soft. “Come in and sit.”
Lucy nodded slightly and walked inside.
She was wearing a very simple outfit, a white T–shirt with black pants and a necklace around her neck. Her short, slightly messy hair fell in a few strands at the corners of her eyes. She looked clean, sharp, and cool.
She stopped beside the bed and looked at Anna, who was sitting propped up against the pillows.
Lucy scratched her forehead with one finger.
How was she supposed to start? Call her mentor right away? Or ease into it little by little?
“Lulu?” Anna spoke first, testing the water as she spoke.
Lucy’s eyes lit up. She walked over without hiding a thing, smiling. “As expected of you. I didn’t say anything in the real world, but you can still identify me with a glance.”
“When you were little, you did send me pictures,” Anna said with a smile.
“So then… Boss,” Lucy called her properly.
Back when Anna retired from the scene, she had told Lucy she didn’t need to call her that anymore, that she had only been teaching her for those decades.
But in Lucy’s heart, once a mentor, always a mentor.
Anna’s smile deepened. “Sit.”
“You two…” Sierra felt her mind go a bit blank. The last time Lucy had come to see her, she had said her mom only looked like her mentor. How had that suddenly turned into the real thing?

“Sorry about last time. Your mom really is my mentor.” Lucy was being direct this time. “The situation was a bit complicated then, so I didn’t tell you outright.”
Understanding appeared in Sierra’s eyes, and she didn’t press for more.
“Boss,” Lucy said, planning to hint at a few things, “you chose to walk away back then, but things have changed. Maybe it’s time for you to pick your skills back up and use them again?”
Anna paused.
She glanced at Sierra, then nodded. “Alright.”
Even though they hadn’t been in touch for many years, the time they had known each other was enough to give them a tacit understanding of each other. Anna understood exactly what Lucy was really saying.
The two of them began talking about what happened in the past and what the situation was in the present.
Sierra and Holly left them the space to catch up and stepped out of the room.
“When did you start hanging out with someone like that behind my back? Why didn’t you introduce me?”
As soon as they were outside, Holly shot first, glaring at Sierra like any word could be her last.
“She’s a woman,” Sierra explained.
“I wouldn’t care if she were a guy,” Holly muttered.
