“I’ve asked the doctor. Today’s rehab was already finished before you came home.”

John called her out without a second of hesitation.

“The rehab on the schedule is done,” Sierra answered, “but I haven’t done what Dr. Smith asked me to do.”

“What?” John narrowed his eyes.

“Talking to my mom to stimulate her brain,” Sierra said with complete confidence.

John studied her face. When he saw she didn’t flinch, he changed tactics. “Let’s go.”

Sierra blinked. “What?”

“I’ll go with you,” John said.

“It’s fine,” Sierra said, refusing at once. “You should get back to work. Me alone is enough at the hospital.”

“I’m your husband. I should be with you when you visit your mom.” John shut down any chance of her arguing. “Or were you just making things up with what you said a few days ago? Are you still thinking about getting a divorce?”

Of course she was, but she could not say that out loud. She wasn’t in a position to handle any trouble John might stir up.

“I just don’t want to keep you away from your work,” she said, giving the safest reason she could think of.

John’s expression slowly became stormy. She still hadn’t answered him directly.

“It won’t.” He didn’t show what he was thinking. He only repeated himself. “Let’s go.”

Even if Sierra wanted to refuse, it was pointless at this point. She could only go downstairs and out the doorway with him. They had just stepped out of the villa and had not even gotten into the car when John called to her in a low voice. “Sierra.”

She turned her head. “What is it?”

“Today is the tenth of July,” John said, looking straight at her.

Sierra frowned, puzzled. Why bring that up out of nowhere?

“According to the staff at the Clerk’s Office, the twelfth is the last day we can officially confirm the divorce.” His gaze never left her face. “Why haven’t you mentioned it?”

She met his eyes, her expression completely calm. “Why do you think so?”

“If you want a divorce, I’ll go with you,” John said.

She had been fooled once and wouldn’t be fooled a second time. So what if he went with her? It wasn’t like he was actually going to finalize the divorce.

The moment she showed even a hint that she wanted to leave, who knew what he would use to threaten her next?

“No.” She forced her emotions down. “Get in the car.”

“A few days ago, Lucy told me that if you like someone, you should talk to them honestly instead of just forcing your way,” John said solemnly. “I want to know what you really think about all of this,”

Sierra worked hard to calm down the emotions that were slowly bubbling up to the surface again.
