“Since you’re so happy, shouldn’t you give me a little reward?” John pulled Sierra’s hand, his gentle tone lifting slightly.

Sierra gave him a sideways look.

She did not believe for a second that John did not know what she was really thinking. To say something like that right now… Was he doing it just to disgust her?

She shot back, “I’ll reward you by sending you back to the company to work and make money. Don’t come looking for me until you’ve earned it all back.”

John did not get angry.

Sierra felt the most genuine to him when she was like this.

They did not speak again for the rest of the drive to the hospital. One of them spent the whole time looking out the window, while the other watched the person looking out the window.

At the hospital, John behaved perfectly. He spoke politely and calmly with Anna and asked about her condition while showing concern for her health, looking like a humble, dutiful son–in–law the whole time.

But Anna was no fool.

As someone who had seen plenty in her lifetime, she understood that a man like John was even harder to deal with than Nathan. So, once he finished asking about her condition, she spoke up.

“I heard you have a very close relationship with another woman?”

John looked completely calm. “Do you mean Pamela?”

“Yes,” Anna answered bluntly.

“She saved my life when I was a child,” John said, unhurried. “The only reason I care for her or treat her well is to repay that debt. There’s nothing else.”

“You made things hard for Sierra because of her,” Anna said.

While she was in the coma, she had heard every word Sierra came to say to her every day. So, she naturally knew what Sierra had gone through during this time.

“I admit that this is my fault, and I’m willing to make amends and apologize,” John replied, as deliberative as ever. “When she wanted to divorce me back then, I was angry. I did some irrational things in the heat of the moment.”

“Then how do you explain your transfer of marital assets and your denying her worth in the marriage?” Anna stared pointedly at him. “You don’t do something like that just because you’re angry.”

“There was no transfer. I said that on purpose for her to shake her determination for a divorce. If you don’t believe me, you can look into it at any time,” John said.

This time, he was telling the truth.

“As for denying her value, that was something I said in anger, too.”

The value Sierra brought him was far more than just a family. She was his only light still shining in his world.

Sierra did not feel any better because of what he was saying. It did not matter whether what he said now was true or not to her anymore. He had already hurt her back then, and it was not something that could be smoothed over with explanations and attempts to make up for it later.

She really had been heartbroken and disappointed.

Anna looked at him.

John was much better than Nathan.
