Chapter 373
John’s dark eyes stayed fixed on her. Sierra met his gaze calmly as the air between them turned heavy. Neither of them had any intention of speaking up first.
She didn’t know how long had passed before John finally spoke.
He reached out and pulled a stray hair by her ear, his expression as composed as ever. “Then I’ll work on it and make your mom accept me.”
Sierra let out a small, unenthusiastic sound. “Sure.”
John’s fingertip slid from her ear to her cheek. “I’ll head back, then. Take good care of yourself at the hospital.”
“Sure,” Sierra said.
John then said, “If anything happens, call me.”
Sierra replied like a wooden doll. “Alright.”
“That cold?” John lightly pinched her face, his tone still indulgent. “Your mom just gave me a hard time. You’re not going to comfort me a little?”
“I don’t know how to comfort you.” When Sierra didn’t love someone, it showed. “Go back and get some rest.”
John’s gaze did not change. “Alright. I’ll follow your instructions.”
Sierra couldn’t even be bothered to respond.
John knew how unwilling she was, and he didn’t keep pushing her just to make himself feel worse. “Go back inside.”
“Alright.” Sierra turned and left without the slightest pause.
He watched her walk farther and farther away. She never once turned back to look at him, and when she finally disappeared from his sight, the calm darkness in John’s eyes stirred, becoming a distant chill.
The driver quickly got out and opened the car door for him. John got in without a flicker of emotion.
He hadn’t even settled into his seat before he saw someone already sitting beside him.
“Hi,” Kenneth greeted with a smile.
John’s brow furrowed slightly. “Why are you here?”
“I heard your wife’s biological dad is the chairman of Lynch Group, so I came over to snoop a bit. I didn’t expect to stumble into this awkward little scene,” Kenneth replied.
If he had known it would end like this, he would have waited until the car started before climbing out, no matter what.
John pressed his lips, a faint chill in his eyes.
“Boss, are we going to the company or back to Campanile Estate?” the driver asked from the front.
“To the company,” John said.
Kenneth glanced at the time. It was already past five in the afternoon. “What are you going to the company for at this hour? By the time you get there, everyone will be gone.”
John said nothing.
If he didn’t put in some overtime ahead of time, how was he supposed to play along with her little running–away–from–home act? How was he supposed to teach her a lesson she would remember?

“Is the chairman of Lynch Group really your wife’s real dad?” Since John still didn’t answer, Kenneth just changed the subject and kept talking.
“Yeah,” John answered nonchalantly.
He opened his phone and told Robin to transfer the money back to Anna. If he really took that money, he might as well throw his pride away.
Kenneth kept digging for more gossip. “Then, isn’t it going to be really hard for you to keep her?”
John’s eyes stayed on the phone screen. “Whether I can keep her has nothing to do with her family background. It only has to do with who she is.”
As long as Sierra couldn’t let go of friends like Holly and Nicholas, even if she acknowledged Nathan as her father, she would still come back to John on her own because she would be afraid he would go after them hard.
Kenneth opened his mouth, then held back.
He wanted to tell John to admit he was wrong, to apologize properly, and let her go, but he also knew this man was stubborn to
the core.
“You can stop the things I told you to do before.” Once John saw Robin’s reply, he put his phone away and spoke in an even tone. “When she leaves, you don’t need to stop her.”
Kenneth stared, looking as if the sun had risen in the west. “Have you figured it out?”
John’s voice stayed calm. “If she wants to go, I can’t keep her. But the happier she is when she walks away, the more anxious and regretful she’ll be when she finds out something happened to her friends.”
Kenneth fell silent. He really shouldn’t have expected anything else from John. “What if she doesn’t regret it?”
“She will.” John’s answer was firm.
He was confident he knew Sierra well in these matters. There were only a few people she truly cared about. If she wouldn’t regret it, then she never would have given up Holly and the others‘ help in the first place because of his threat.
At this moment, Kenneth put on a serious face.
“Try acting like a decent human being for once!”
