Chapter 38
When John arrived, Sierra was still talking with the doctor about the details of the surgery.
John was still wearing an expensive custom suit as usual, his expression as calm as ever.
The moment Pamela saw John, she pushed herself up from the chair despite the pain, looking at him as if she had suffered terribly.
“John!”
Dr. Smith greeted him at once. “Mr. Henderson.”
“What happened?” John stopped in front of Pamela, his gaze dropping to the freshly bandaged wounds on her knee and elbow.
“I heard Sierra’s been trying to raise money for her mother’s surgery everywhere, so I wanted to talk to her and see if there was anything I could do to help.” Pamela glanced at Sierra, a storm of emotions gleaming in her eyes. “We were friends, after all.”
John did not say anything, waiting for her to go on.
“But I didn’t expect her to get so angry the moment she saw me. She called me a homewrecker and said that I… I…”
Pamela’s eyes suddenly reddened. She covered her face and started to cry, as if everything afterward was too hard to repeat for
her.
John gently held her shoulder and helped her to sit in the nearby chair. “What did she say?”
“She said I only pick up the things she discarded. The title of Mrs. Henderson, the black card you gave me, and even you.” Pamela’s voice shook harder with every word, tears rolling down her cheeks. “She can say whatever she wants about me, but she shouldn’t say anything about you.”
John lifted his eyes and looked at Sierra. He didn’t say a word. His expression didn’t show anger, yet Sierra could feel the chill in
his gaze.
The room’s mood instantly plummeted, and even breathing became tough.
“We argued a couple of times, and she acted all superior,” Pamela continued, “but I don’t care about any of that. As long as I can stay by your side, that’s enough.”
As Pamela finished, even the temperature in the room seemed to drop.
John still didn’t look away from Sierra. “I’d really like to know how you plan to take everything that belongs to Pamela back into your hands with a single sentence.”
Sierra opened her mouth wanting to say something, and then shut up. While Pamela did twist what happened, she had also said those words.
“John.” Pamela tugged lightly at his arm.
John’s eyes softened at once. “What is it?”
“She said everything out of anger. Can you please not pin the blame on her?” Pamela quietly added another accusation against Sierra. “She’s just too worried about her mother, so she spoke without thinking. If it were me, I might not be able to be as calm as her. I’m only telling you this because I want you to comfort ine.”
“This injury is from her pushing you.” John’s expression darkened.
Pamela hesitated as if on cue, then glanced at Sierra. “She didn’t do it on purpose. I just wanted to stop her so we could talk, but
she…”
She left it hanging, but what she meant was already clear.

John didn’t answer, but his expression had gone completely cold.
“I admit I said some of those things, but I didn’t push her,” Sierra said.
She had never really faced how vicious people could be, and she had seen too little of the ugliness in human nature. Her character was so direct to the point that she could do something stupid.
