Sierra stepped out of the car, her chest tight as she stared at the open front door.
She still had no idea whether John was out of danger even now.
“You’re back?” Lucy came out from inside, looking at Sierra the same way she always did. “Kenneth told me what happened at the hotel. Were you scared?”
Sierra looked at her, a mix of emotions inside her.
Lucy walked up to her and pulled a strand of hair back. “What is it?”
Sierra bit her lip. She waited for quite some time before saying, “Don’t you guys…blame me?”
They did not know the full story and what she and John had talked about. Normally, his friends would have come straight at her, saying that no matter how bad their fight got, she should never have picked up a knife, that she knew exactly how important John was, and that a lot of things would fall apart if something happened to him.
Then they would have blamed her and decided it was all her fault.
Lucy was wearing a faint smile, making others who saw her feel relaxed. “None of us are blaming you, so why are you doing it to yourself first?”
“I just…”
The kinder they were, the worse Sierra felt. It had only been a conversation about whether she would go back, yet a knife somehow got involved in the conversation.
“We all know what John is like. With that temper of his, it’s not exactly a surprise that he would do something like this.” Lucy patted Sierra’s head. “You’re the one who shouldn’t be blaming it on yourself. If anything, he should be paying you for emotional compensation.”
Sierra raised her eyes.
“After all, he has scared you,” Lucy said.
Sierra lowered her eyes. “Thank you.”
“Mind if I stay here for a couple of days?” Lucy asked. “Just as a guest. Nothing to do with John.”
“You’re welcome to stay with us,” Sierra said, and Lucy then went in with her.
As soon as Tommy saw Sierra coming home, he ran over and wrapped his arms around her and said warmly, “Mom, what were you doing outside? Why did you leave in such a hurry?”
Sierra had just been kidnapped for one minute, and Lucy had shown up the next, so Tommy never really had a chance to be suspicious of what was happening.
“Just something small. It won’t happen again,” Sierra explained to him, but Tommy did not press.
For a while after that, Tommy continued reading his book while Sierra sat on the couch, staring into the air, her mind playing with all kinds of outcomes.
“Worried?” Lucy came over and sat beside her.
Sierra said nothing, which was answer enough.
Lucy was not like Forde. She was not going to carry these feelings back to John.
“He’s not going to die,” Lucy said, trying to steady hier. “You know better than anyone what kind of man he is.”

Which was true, but Sierra’s heart and mind weren’t in control as she kept thinking about what would happen if he really could not pull through.
“Lucy,” Sierra asked.
Lucy hummed.
“I remember you and John grew up together,” Sierra continued.
“Both Kenneth and me,” Lucy nodded.
“When we left the hotel, Kenneth told me that ever since what happened back then, John has been keeping himself in check.” For the first time, Sierra wanted to know about the secret John was trying to keep hidden. “What happened?”
Lucy paused.
On her usually carefree, unconcerned expression, something distant flashed in her eyes. It was gone in a heartbeat, before she
returned to her usual tone.
“His best friend died.”
Sierra’s chest tightened as she thought of the photo Solomon had shown her. John was around sixteen or seventeen, sitting on the ground in a bloodstained white shirt with his back against a wall. His eyes were empty, and he looked desolate and lonely.
