Regrets Come Too Late (Sierra and Johnny) novel Chapter 403

August.

It was the hottest month of the year.

Lucy often wished she could go back and ask him if the rooftop was not burning hot in August, and why he had not waited for them.

Even for just five more minutes.

After that, John stopped smiling, and he was not so full of himself anymore.Thinking of the happy days the four of them had shared, a hint of nostalgia flickered in her eyes. He used to be ridiculously vain, always arguing with that guy about who was better looking.

Sierra’s chest felt even tighter.

Around seventeen.

The best of their teenage years.

Most people remember those years more vividly than any others. Going through that at that age was something you would likely never forget or get over.

Kenneth and I were both worried he would end up with real psychological issues because of it back then,Lucy said. He stopped talking, stopped smiling, and the way he dealt with people got nastier each time

Lucy gave Sierra a look.

Until we saw him with you. Once John felt like he had some warmth to him again, we finally felt okay going off to live our own

lives.

Sierra recalled the first time she had met John at a formal party. Her parents had gone off to socialize, and she had found a quiet corner to sit in. She was not expecting some man with some status to disturb her. John was the one who had appeared and gotten her out of it.

Just like Lucy had said, John hardly ever smiled back then. He felt extremely distant and aloof. She had always thought he was hard to approach and not someone you wanted to cross, so she had kept her distance without even thinking about it.

But after that, they kept running into each other every now and then, here and there.

Later, when they were married, he told her he had arranged all those coincidences.

Sierra,Lucy called her name, and she finally snapped back. There was warmth in her eyes. Thank you for helping us pull that stubborn man back to us.

I didn’t pull him back.Thinking of that knife, Sierra felt that he was getting even worse than before. He probably isn’t in a better state than he was back then.

He’s doing alright.Lucy sounded very matteroffact.

Sierra looked at her as she blinked. What do you mean?

He wouldn’t listen to anyone before this,Lucy said. Now he cares what you think.

Did he?

Sierra could not feel it at all. All she saw was his own selfishness in everything he did.

Sierra, I have a favor to ask of you,Lucy had caught the shift in Sierra’s mood, but still chose to say it now.

Sierra paused. Go ahead.

You’ve seen how he is now. The minute there’s a disagreement, he turns the knife on himself

As Lacy spoke, Sierra couldn’t help but think about the direction this was going.

After all the conversation, Lucy was also hoping she would go back to him and help him with his emotional baggage.

I hope you keep doing what you did today,Lucy said. Don’t give in to him, don’t indulge him, and don’t let his threats or pressure shake you. Let him hit a wall.

Sierra stared at her for a moment.

Thiswas nothing like what she had imagined?

So?Lucy asked.

Sierra felt embarrassed at her own thoughts. I’m sorry.

Lucy was such a good person, yet she had suspected her like that.

Lucy blinked. For what?
