When Robin said John would cheer up after seeing her, Sierra kept her voice as cool as she could. “Not necessarily.”

Robin blinked. “Huh?”

Kenneth echoed, “What?”

They traded a look, having a bad feeling about this.

By then, the three of them were already inside John’s room. The man on the bed was pale, his eyes closed as he lay motionless in sleep. Sierra’s eyes went straight to his chest, where he stabbed himself.

“Sir,” Robin stepped to the bedside and called softly. “Ms. Bell is here.”

John slowly opened his eyes. The eyes that were usually distant and cold had lost some of their iciness. There was now a hint of softness. When he saw her, something flickered in his gaze.

“I have something I want to say to him alone,” Sierra said. She put the handbag on the bedside cabinet.

She wore a simple dress today.

John gave the other two a look.

After Robin raised the bed for John, he slipped out with Kenneth. Once outside, they both traded another

look.

Kenneth started first, staring at the tightly closed door. “What do you think Sierra wants to talk to your

boss about?”

Robin tried, “His injuries?”

“If she’s worried about his injuries, she’d be here the first day.” Kenneth could not shake the feeling that it wasn’t so simple. “There’s no need to wait until now.”

Not to mention, she didn’t look like someone here to show she cared. Not with the expression she was wearing, at least. She looked like she was here to kick up a storm.

“What they talk about is not important.” Robin took it much more calmly than Kenneth. “What matters is that seeing Ms. Bell will make Mr. Henderson happy.”

Kenneth kept his eyes on the door.

He could only hope so.

Inside the ward, John still had an IV line attached to his hand. He looked at Sierra beside the bed, and the

first thing he asked was, “Did I scare you that day?”

Sierra did not hide it. “Yes.”

John’s dark eyes rested on her. “You didn’t come here just to visit a patient.”

Sierra paused. She did not expect him to be that direct.

“Go on. What is it?” John sounded calm.

“After I went home that day, I thought it over. We didn’t have to end up like this.” Sierra eased into it slowly. “If you trace it back to the root cause, it still comes down to your relationship with Pamela.”

John stayed silent.

Sierra met his eyes. “If she had not shown up, and you had not promised to support and protect her for life, none of this would have happened.”

His deep, unreadable eyes moved. It was the last thing she should have been saying at a time like this. He asked, “What are you trying to say?”

“You can’t let her go, and I can’t accept that,” Sierra’s voice stayed flat. “I also don’t want to go through

intimidations like the last two days ever again. I want you to…”

“Sierra.”

John cut her off, his gaze darker than she had ever seen.

She looked at his eyes in reflex.
