Whispered
Joey still remembered the terms of that agreement clearly. “Nope.”
John thought of the deeds Sierra had tucked under the pillow in the bedroom. He had only given it a skim and put it back where it was. He even told Mrs. Brown not to touch anything in the bedroom when she changed the sheets.
Thinking about it now, the date of Anna’s accident matched the date on that deed.
The people who had acted were most likely worried that once Anna transferred everything to Sierra, Sierra would go back and buy those shares back.
“They weren’t afraid they might go too far and kill your aunt?” John’s gaze darkened.
“Whether she lived or died didn’t matter to them.” Joey leaned back in the chair. He knew their thought pattern well. “As long as Lucas is alive, Sierra won’t be the first in line to inherit, and she won’t be a threat then.”
John said nothing more.
It seemed the only one who knew about Anna and Lucas’s contract marriage was Jubilee.
“This news is enough for a partnership, right?” Joey asked.
“I can’t decide that.” John never let himself be used for free. He believed in fair trade. “Both Sierra and Anna don’t want anything to do with the King family, and I’m just someone about to be divorced. I can’t decide for them.”
Joey let out a low chuckle while John simply watched him with calm eyes.
“Alright, I’ll talk to them,” Joey said. He stood up, looking a little thin in the hospital gown. “When the time comes, you can help from behind the scenes.”
John didn’t answer, but his silence already meant he agreed.
Not long after, Skyler appeared at the door.
When he saw Joey with his collar hanging open, standing in John’s room with the air conditioning on high, he stepped in. He greeted John first, then turned to Joey.
“The doctor told you that for these three days you can’t stay in a room that’s too cold.”
“Just two minutes,” Joey said.
Skyler started pulling him out. “Not even one.”
Joey trailed along even as he complained, “Who’s the boss here?”
“You are,” Skyler said with a straight face, not even slowing.
Robin came in in time to see this. He didn’t bother with it and went straight to John with his report, saying he had already sorted Pamela’s lodging.
“Keep an eye on Joey’s two brothers for now,” John said. “If anything looks off, tell me right away. Also, have Lucy look into that accident Anna had at the parking lot.”
Robin agreed at once. “Alright.”
He asked for more details so he would know where to focus, and John repeated what Joey had told him.
“What if Joey can’t talk to Ms. Bell and the others?” Robin was a little worried. He had gotten a feel for Sierra’s personality after their time together.

“He will.” John sounded completely sure. “Sierra cares about her mother, and her mother cares about her. They’re both afraid the other will get hurt by those people again.”
Things unfolded exactly the way he expected.
The day before Sierra’s birthday, Joey was officially discharged after his stunt with the allergy.
