“That’s my private business. What does it have to do with you?”
Pamela’s heart was pounding. She was almost screaming at Jolin now, her palms slick with sweat.
“You said you’d take good care of me. Is this what you call taking care of me? Digging into me behind my back, prying into my privacy? Don’t you think that’s crossing a line?”
John still didn’t know that she wasn’t his savior. As long as she played her part well, she could still get away. Even if she couldn’t get any money from him, she could still squeeze some out of Sierra.
There were also the gifts and the house he had given her before. At worst, she could sell them all. He was already starting to suspect her, anyway.
John’s already dark eyes darkened even more.
Robin spoke up for his own boss. “Lucy and Kenneth looked into it on their own accord. Mr. Henderson didn’t tell them to.”
“Then what about pretending you didn’t have the money while secretly investigating me at the same time?” Pamela let all her anger out. “Don’t tell me that wasn’t his idea, either?”
“When something feels off, there’s nothing wrong with giving it a closer look,” Robin answered with a straight face.
“From now on, I want you and your friends to stop investigating me and stay out of my private business,” Pamela said coldly. “If you can’t do that, then stop bringing up your so–called promise!”
Robin frowned. He didn’t like that demand at all. He immediately glanced at John, still trying to persuade him. “Sir, you can’t agree to something like that.”
“Tell Kenneth and Lucy to stop investigating.” A faint shadow settled over John’s black eyes.
“Sir.” Robin sounded worried.
It was tough to pick out anything wrong with Pamela. It hadn’t been easy to get a chance for John to shake her off. If they stopped now, everything they had found would be wasted.
When John looked up again, his eyes were calm. “Just do it.”
Robin took a deep breath and swallowed whatever he wanted to say. He called Kenneth, passing along John’s instruction.
Kenneth sounded puzzled. “Why?”
Robin told him Pamela was there.
Kenneth’s tone didn’t change. “Got it.”
Robin stared at the phone. Just that? Nothing else?
“Do you still want the money?” John turned back to Pamela, who was clearly feeling guilty and was using anger to cover it.
“Yes.” Pamela felt that something was off, but she had no time to think it over. “Give it to me the way I instructed. Once I left and found a place to settle down, we’re even.”
“Alright,” John said.
Robin slowly calmed down too when he saw how calm John was.
John was not someone who let others push him around. Agreeing with everything Pamela asked for without a word did not suit
him at all.

His eyes lingered on John’s calm face. Was John implying what he was thinking?
“Give her the money as per her instructions,” John said.
“Got it,” Robin replied.
