Chapter 456
“It’s alright. I’ll wait for you here,” Cyrus said without thinking when he heard Sierra say she wanted to excuse Holly and herself
for a bit.
But Nathan said the exact opposite. “Alright. We’ll go in and wait for you.”
Sierra gave a slight nod. “I’ll see you later.”
Cyrus blinked in surprise. He was about to lecture Nathan when Nathan said, “You really didn’t notice that she doesn’t want to go in with us?”
“She just doesn’t want to go in with you,” Cyrus said argumentatively.
“Fine. Stay here and wait as long as you want.” Nathan couldn’t be bothered to argue with Cyrus. It wasn’t his image that would suffer, anyway. “We’ll see whether she comes in with you later.”
Cyrus wanted to snap back and say that he could wait. When he thought of how she had reacted to him just now, he wasn’t so confident. In the end, he left Joey outside and went in first.
It was always more comfortable for the youths to stay with the youths.
Meanwhile, Holly finally spoke after watching them leave. “Your biological father and grandfather both seem to care about you a lot.”
“That’s not it.” Sierra’s eyes darkened. “It’s guilt.”
They were good to her because they felt guilty about the past. They knew her mother would never accept their apology, so they shifted their attention to her instead, hoping to use her to mend things with her mother.
“Whether it’s guilt or something else, that doesn’t change the fact that they want to treat you well,” Holly said. She had never been that rigid, always much more laid back. “Since people are going to talk either way, you might as well accept it openly.”
Sierra paused.
Holly continued, “You know the people from the King family aren’t going to stop just because you and Anna won’t accept them.”
That simple sentence was a food for thought for Sierra.
After a moment of silence, she said one word. “Alright.”
“Come on. Let’s go in.” Holly slipped her arm around Sierra’s to give her a little support.
The two of them walked into the banquet hall together.
Joey had been waiting nearby the whole time. When he saw them coming, he walked over and started chatting as if they were already quite close. “Did you like the birthday gift from last time?”
Sierra looked at him, not understanding why he was bringing that up again.
“If there’s anything else you like, just tell me anytime. I’ll have Grandpa get it for you,” Joey said. “I was supposed to be there last time too, but something came up and I couldn’t make it.”
In truth, it wasn’t that he could not make it. He was simply afraid of running into John, and that John would bring up what he had done to Tommy.
He had already settled things with John, but he knew Sierra’s personality and how much she cared about her son. If she ever found out, she would never forgive him for it.
For his own safety, it was better to stay away for now.
“No, I don’t need anything. Thank you,” Sierra said coolly.

Joey could feel the distance between them, but he did not take it personally. He kept talking without pause for the next few minutes. Even Holly, who was usually quite talkative herself, started to feel overwhelmed.
