Sierra did not ask Joey for more details and went in with Holly. She figured she would cross that bridge when she got to it, no matter what Maxwell wanted.

“Sierra,” Holly said as she glanced at the people around them who kept looking their way. “Are they all curious about you?”

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

Sierra’s expression barely changed.

She had been through this before, right after she married John. Back then, everyone had been curious why someone like John would marry a woman from a family that had fallen like her, and why he always held her hand and stayed close to her.

She had been curious, too.

John’s answer had been simple: because he liked her.

“I’ll walk you this far.” After taking them where he had been told to, Joey had no intention of staying. “If anything comes up, call me anytime. I’ve got other things to take care of.”

Sierra thanked him out of politeness. “Alright. Thank you.”

Joey then added, “Grandpa and Nathan are both upstairs. If you get bored down here, you can go up. Second floor, second room on the right.”

“Alright,” Sierra said.

Joey did not stay any longer and went off to handle his own business. Grandpa had warned him not to stick too close to Sierra the whole time in case she found them annoying.

As soon as he left, the attention of the other young people in the banquet hall shifted to Sierra. They stood in small groups with wine glasses in hand, watching her with curiosity and scrutiny.

“Who’s going to go test the water?” Opal Chapman, the Chapman family’s oldest daughter asked as her long brown hair draped over her shoulders.

“She’s the little princess from both the Lynch and King families. No one’s brave enough to do it.”

“Exactly!”

“Didn’t you see when she got out of the car? Even Mr. King and Mr. Lynch don’t always get to do that.”

“That may be true, but the main branch of the King family doesn’t seem too happy about her.”

“Even so, she’s still being doted on by both families. You know perfectly well what kind of status Nathan and Cyrus have. If you want to go, go ahead. I’m not getting dragged into that.”

“It’s still too early to call her the little princess of both families,” Opal said again. “So far, the only one in the King family welcoming her is Cyrus. On the Lynch family’s side, only Nathan has made his position clear.”

The others nodded.

Opal looked at Sierra as if she were some naive outsider. “We may not have seen what happened to her mother, but we’ve all heard from our older relatives talking about it at home. Nathan’s father, Daniel, had never been happy with Anna, much less her daughter.”

The moment she said that, someone got an idea.

“I’ll go.” A young man from the Lewis family said in a carefree tone. “Let’s see how easy it will be for me to make her fall for me.
