He jumped off a building.

John was the one who took care of the body and handled the funeral.

Sierra pulled the blanket over herself and rolled over, trying to shake off those feelings. They were already divorced, and John was nothing more than a stranger now. Whatever had happened in the past, and whatever might happen in the future, had nothing to do with her anymore.

But the more she tried to think that way, the more those thoughts spiraled in her mind.

Meanwhile, Tommy opened his chat with John on his watch phone. He wanted to say something, but he did not know how to start. After all, John was still his dad. Now that his parents are divorced, he should say something to him.

He hesitated for a full ten minutes.

In the end, he sent a text anyway: [Uncle John, I heard you and Mom got divorced?]

When John got the message, he was still working late at the office. It was already a little past midnight. His fingers moved across the keyboard as he replied: [Worried?]

Tommy could be a little prideful and he didn’t like showing John he was worried.

I’m happy.Tommy sent a voice message instead as he was getting too lazy to type. His voice was soft but still had that crisp to it. I’m happy Mom can finally find me a whole bunch of dads fair and square.

John played right along: [When she does, let me know. I’ll meet all your future stepdads.]

Tommy went quiet.

How shameless!

John then sent another message: [It’s late. Go to sleep.]

You’re not sleeping?Tommy asked.

If I don’t want you to treat your many stepdads like your real dad, I’ve got to put in some effort,John said, tossing out an excuse as he replied using a voice message.

Tommy’s expression was not as relaxed as his tone, however. A little over ten seconds later, he called John.

John picked up almost at once. Can’t sleep?

Do you regret divorcing Mom?Tommy asked instead of answering.

John did not reply. He had never planned to really get divorced. How could he regret something he didn’t plan to do?

If you admit your mistake to Mom, apologize, and promise you won’t ever do it again, then I can say a few nice things about you in front of her. I’ll even let you come over for one meal a month.Deep down, Tommy still wanted them to be happy. Even if they did not remarry, being friends would be fine too.

John’s hand tightened slightly around the phone. After a moment of silence, he only said, Go to bed soon.

Tommy frowned.

Something felt off.

With how shameless his dad usually was, he should have teased him the second he heard that. Something likeDo you think I need you to put in a good word for me?

In John’s mind, it was a man’s job to spoil his own wife. He did not need anyone else’s help. But now, he was dodging the questionWas he hiding something from Tommy?

Are you and Mom hiding something from me?Tommy asked.

Kids shouldn’t ask about grownup things,John said; his tone did not change.

If you won’t tell me, then I’ll set Mom up with someone else every single day.Tommy pulled out his ace in the hole. When Mom marries someone else, don’t regret it.

Then make sure you find someone reliable for her.John’s tone stayed as cool as ever.

Tommy huffed and puffed, annoyed.
