“Do you think I don’t know that?” Cyrus shot back at Maxwell from the other side of the phone at once, but he quietly took the words to heart.

Maxwell got straight to the point. “Your trust in her comes from the fact that she’s my aunt’s daughter, not from the fact that she’s Sierra.”

Cyrus paused.

The line fell silent for a moment.

“Think it over.” Maxwell left it at that. “I still have some things to do, so I’m hanging up.”

Cyrus took a while to get back to normal. When he thought about everything he had done lately, he realized it had all been about making it up to Anna.

Never about Sierra herself.

Sierra understood all of that, but she did not care. She had grown up in a loving home and had never lacked affection, so she could calmly see through how everyone felt about her, including what was behind all the kindness Cyrus showed her.

After leaving King Group, she went straight home.

According to the assignment task book, her official start date would be after the holidays, so the first thing she did when she got back was to ask the company’s human resource department for everyone’s resumes. She spent the next two days at home going through them.

One day, she was reading the resumes of the company’s product manager and technical director when Holly called.

Sierra answered without looking up. “Hey.”

“Did you pay for the article?” Holly asked.

Sierra frowned. “What article?”

“My mom said her media company got a bunch of submissions about you.” Holly sat beside Hera as she spoke, her eyes moving over one file after another on the computer screen. “You didn’t pay for them?”

“No?” Sierra denied it right away. “Why would I do that?”

“I thought maybe you were worried Charlie and Peter would come after you, so you deliberately put your identity out into the open.” Holly said.

She and Sierra had always been blunt with each other.

“That wouldn’t help me at all.” Sierra was able to think through things like this easily. “What’s the content? Are they smearing my reputation?”

“If they were smearing you, I wouldn’t suspect you paid for them yourself.”

Holly scrolled through several of them and told her what was written.

“They’re all saying things like the long–lost little princess of the Lynch family and the King family has returned, and both families are overjoyed. Mom said that if you arranged these, you should pull them. Our social circle is nothing like the entertainment industry. Over there, bad publicity is still publicity. But in our world, the more discreet you are, the better.”

Otherwise, Holly would not have bothered calling to ask.

A flicker of doubt crossed Sierra’s eyes. The wording in those articles did not sound like something Cyrus or Nathan would have published.

But if it was not them, then who wanted her identity made public?

“Can your mom trace whoever sent the copy to your side and find out who’s behind them?” she asked.

“That won’t be easy. Whoever sent the copy to my mom’s company used a third party,” Holly explained.” But whoever did this definitely meant trouble. It was probably someone who isn’t happy with you.”
