“I do,” George admitted to Loren over the phone. He didn’t realize there was any problem at all. “That’s exactly why I chose it. It’s one of the stronger media companies in Jade City. Even if anyone looks into it, they won’t be able to trace it back to us.”
Loren took a deep breath.
How could someone be this stupid?!
“Is there a problem?” George asked carefully.
“The CEO of the Isley Group is associated with Sierra.” Loren felt a tightness in his chest. “Don’t you check her connections before you do anything?”
George froze. No one had told him that.
“Does the other side know you were the one who handled this?” Loren wanted a better picture of what happened so he could prepare for how to deal with Sierra later when he met her.
“No. I employed another company as an agent,” George answered quickly, afraid that if he was any slower, he would be punished. “Even if they investigate it, they won’t be able to trace it that far.”
Loren felt slightly relieved.
After a moment of silence, he warned George, “Find out why the other companies didn’t respond, either. I need this to gain traction before the holidays end.”
George agreed at once. “Understood!”
Half an hour later, Loren got his answer.
Every draft from every company had been suppressed.
“Who did that?” he asked.
George had no idea. “I don’t know.”
Loren forced himself to calm down and think it through. The only family with the ability to pull something like this off in Harbor City was the Chapman family. They had always been the top when it came to this industry.
With that thought in mind, he called Opal. She was the one running Starview Media, after all.
He briefly explained the situation, then asked what he really wanted to know. “Has anyone come to you in the last two days and asked you to suppress anything?”
“Yes.” Opal did not hesitate to answer at all.
“Who?” Loren asked.

“You understand that there’s a confidentiality clause as part of the contract.” Opal’s voice was gentle, and there was no way to tell what she was thinking. “If I told you, how would I conduct business in the
future?”
“Name your price,” Loren said.
“Since when have you done things without principles?” Opal asked.
“Principles depend on the situation.” Loren understood Opal fairly well. They were both from the younger generation of the four major families, after all. “You probably want another ally in this circle too.”
Opal did not answer.
Loren pressed on. “Am I wrong?”
“I can’t give you a specific name.” Opal’s tone stayed calm. “But I can give you a general range.”
“Fine.” Loren nodded.
“One caveat. If I ever need your help in the future, you’ll have to help me without condition,” Opal said.
Loren frowned.
Without condition?
“Relax. It’ll be something easy for you. It won’t affect your interests in the King family.” Opal knew Loren well enough to know what he was thinking.
“Alright.” Loren agreed.
“The one who asked me to suppress the news is someone I can’t afford to cross.” Opal gave him the range. “That’s all I can tell you.”
