“No,” Nicholas said, when Sierra asked if he needed her help.
Sierra raised her eyebrow and asked, “Really?”

“Of course,” Nicholas answered without thinking, the usual smugness still in his voice. “Someone as capable as me can handle anything on his own.”
“There is something,” Sierra said.
Nicholas kept massaging her shoulders, “What?”
Thinking about how he and Holly were always joking around and bickering, Sierra made a bold guess. “Love.”
Nicholas’s hands stopped, and his heart skipped a beat. In that instant, countless thoughts flashed through his mind.
Had Sierra figured it out? How did she feel about it? Did she like it? Hate it? Or would she never want to see him again?
“Looks like I got it right,” Sierra said as she caught the change in Nicholas’s mood.
Nicholas pressed his lips together and looked at her. He could not see her face from where he stood. He could only

“If you like her, then tell her.” Sierra said it seriously, hoping he would be a little braver. “Don’t hesitate too much about it in this day and age when everything moves so fast. Just brace yourself and confess.”
“What if she turns me down?” Nicholas asked.
“That would be alright too.” Thinking of Holly’s personality, Sierra said, “You could still be friends.”
Nicholas’s hands slowly tightened on her shoulders, and his heart started pounding. “But some people say that once you confess, you might not even be able to stay friends.”
“Then that just means the person confessing doesn’t want to stay friends.” Sierra had no idea the person he liked was her.
Nicholas stared at her for a moment before moving around and sat in front of her. “Why?”
“Because he likes her too much. So much that he doesn’t want any other relationship except being together as partners.” Sierra was speaking from her own point of view. “That includes friendship.”
“You’re lying.” Nicholas used the chance to test the waters, though he still looked as carefree as ever. “Did you forget how cold you were when you rejected others? Some of them were friends you actually got along with.”
“Was I?” Sierra could not remember clearly.
“Yes.” Nicholas remembered it clearly.
“Then it must have been because I didn’t want them distracting me from studying.” In Sierra’s memory, the friends she had been closest to were all from before college, which meant high school. “I didn’t want them wasting time on something that didn’t matter.”
Nicholas thought about it carefully. That actually did sound plausible.
Back then, whenever those people came looking for Sierra after confessing, she was either doing practice papers

or memorizing something.
“So you really wouldn’t distance yourself from a friend just because he confessed?” Nicholas asked.
“Normally, no.” Sierra was still analyzing it objectively. “Only if he started causing me trouble, or got too obsessed.”
Nicholas felt his whole existence suddenly relaxed and he began to smile. “That’s good, then.”
Sierra looked at him, confused. What did he mean by that?
She did not think much of it. Holly was not the type to cut someone off just because a man confessed. Nicholas was still a close friend she had grown up with regardless of everything. Even if Holly did not like him, she would still leave him some dignity.
“Sierra.” Nicholas tried to steady his racing heart, his palms damp with sweat.
Sierra snapped back to her senses and looked at him. “Yes?”
Nicholas met her eyes. “I like you. Will you give me a chance to date you?”
He said it directly, just like the straightforward love of a boy in his youth.
