Just as Nicholas confessed, Sierra’s phone rang. When she saw Holly’s name on the screen, she pushed down the questions in her mind and used them as an excuse.
“Holly’s calling. I need to take this.”
“Okay.” Nicholas sounded as easygoing as ever.
Sierra grabbed her phone and hurried out.
The second the door closed, Nicholas gritted his teeth, pulled out his phone, and sent off a long string of messages to Holly.
[What’s wrong with you?!]
[Why did you have to ruin the moment right now?!]
[I just forgot to tell you beforehand this one time, and you did this?!]
His fingers jabbed at the screen of his phone so hard it looked like he might crack it. He wished he could run over there and beat her up.
Holly did not care about his messages at all. She was watching a movie with her phone to the side while she talked to Sierra on speakers. “How have you been lately?”
“Pretty busy,” Sierra said.
“Is this a bad time?” Holly had noticed her voice was a little low.
Sierra was in her bedroom. “No, it’s fine.”
Holly was as blunt as ever. “Then why do you sound like you’re having an affair?”
Sierra’s expression turned serious. “Have you had an affair before?”
“Sierra, do I need to remind you that the normal response to that question is silence?” Holly knew her best friend too well. “Throwing it back at me means you’re hiding something and you’re feeling guilty about it.”
Sierra fell silent before letting out a light cough. “Was it that obvious?”
“Very.” Holly popped a piece of fruit into her mouth.
Sierra went quiet again.
Before, she had always thought Nicholas liked Holly. The two of them were always bickering around each other, and it often felt like flirting.
A long time ago, Nicholas had said he was gay, but Sierra had taken it as a lousy excuse to keep Holly from noticing how he felt. She had never seen him especially close to any man in all those years, after all except for a rumored boyfriend back in high school.
“What could possibly make you think this hard?” Holly was not even watching the movie anymore as she wanted to hear the tea from Sierra.
“Nicholas confessed to me,” Sierra said.
“And?” Holly asked.

Sierra frowned a little. “You’re not surprised?”
Holly was perfectly calm. “Why would I be?”
“He…” Sierra paused. Then it hit her, and an answer appeared in her mind. “You knew?”
Holly answered frankly. “I do.”
“Since when?” Sierra asked.
“Not that long. I only found out after you got married. That idiot hid it really well!”
Before that, even Holly had fully believed he was gay. But in the end? It turned out he had simply committed to the act fully.
A complicated feeling rose in Sierra’s chest. She had imagined a thousand possibilities, but never once had she imagined he liked her. After all, he and Holly had always looked more like a couple.
“Don’t pressure yourself over this,” Holly said. “He has always been someone carefree. Even if you turn him down, it probably won’t affect him that much. Just follow your heart.”
At lunch, the atmosphere at the dining table was strange.
Sierra sat with Tommy, while Nicholas sat directly across from her. Anna noticed the tension between them, but she did not think much of it. She simply assumed something had happened between the two of them.
By the time lunch ended, Sierra had already sorted out her own thoughts. She went with Nicholas to her study, bit her lip for a moment, and said, “Nicholas…”
“Don’t say it yet,” Nicholas cut in at once.
Sierra blinked.
“Let me guess what you’re about to say.” He looked no different than usual. “You’re going to reject me, right?”
“Yeah.” Sierra nodded.
“I’m this handsome, and you aren’t even a little tempted?” Nicholas leaned closer.
“I’ve always thought of you as a friend,” Sierra said frankly.
