Nicholas took Sierra’s rejection very well. “Fine. Looks like I’m still not charming enough.”

“Don’t idealize something that never happened,” Sierra said, refusing to dwell on pointless possibilities. “We could’ve fought every day and never even become friends. That’s just as possible.”

Nicholas froze.

After thinking it over, he nodded. “True.”

Sierra had always been more mature than the rest of them. If he really had done that, she might have written him off as an annoying kid and got irritated with him.

“Nicholas.” Sierra was always serious about this kind of thing. “Thank you for liking me, but I’m sorry.”

“Don’t make it sound so serious.” Nicholas eased the mood, still wearing that smug expression. “I should be thanking you for rejecting me.”

Sierra looked puzzled. “Why?”

“If you hadn’t rejected me, I might never have been able to let go of a crush I’ve had for more than a decade.” Nicholas did not want to make things hard for Sierra, and he surely did not want to leave her feeling burdened. “I’ll be honest, I can’t even tell whether it’s love or just an obsession that builds up over the years sometimes.”

Sierra looked at him. “Why?”

“I can’t explain it. It’s just a feeling.” Nicholas looked like he was actually thinking it through for once. “We can still be friends though, right? You wouldn’t be so cruel to reject me and then abandon me, would you?”

Sierra pressed her lips. “No.”

“Good.” Nicholas nodded. “At least you’ve still got a conscience.”

The matter passed with Nicholas keeping the conversation light, and the two of them seemed to go right back to how they had been before.

Nicholas knew perfectly well that he had no chance this time. Some women might turn a man down once, twice, three times, then be moved the fourth time by his sincerity and persistence. But… Sierra was not someone like
