“Our boss is away for the next two days or so and will only be back on Wednesday afternoon.”
The interviewer noticed Sierra’s hesitation and provided a bit more explanation.
“If you’re free, we can schedule your final interview for three o’clock on Wednesday afternoon.”
“I have time,” Sierra replied.
Her mother’s surgery was scheduled for this afternoon. Even if something unexpected happened, Tuesday would be enough for her to take care of things.
Sierra didn’t yet know how much the surgery would cost afterward, but she had to secure this job. She could only hope John would not ruin things this time.
When the interview ended, Sierra went straight to the hospital. The operation was not until the afternoon, but she could not stop worrying.
She arrived a little after eleven.
Dr. Smith greeted her briefly. His tone sounded much the same as always. “You understand the surgery, right?”
“I do,” Sierra sat down across from him. The worry on her expression was impossible to hide. “How confident are you?”
“About fifty–fifty,” Dr. Smith answered honestly.
Sierra felt heaviness in her chest. Her mother had lain unconscious in that bed for years.
The woman never responded to anything Sierra said, but her body would sometimes move on reflex, just enough to prove she was still alive. If the surgery failed, she would have to live on a ventilator for the rest of her life…
Sierra couldn’t even begin to imagine it.
“We’ll do everything we can for your mother.” Dr. Smith’s voice was calm as he tried to comfort her. He had seen Sierra’s devotion to her mother over the years. “God looks after those with a good heart.”
“Use whatever you need during the surgery. Don’t worry about whether I can afford it. I’ll find a way to get the money,” Sierra said with a strained smile.
She knew all the talk about God was only meant to console her.
Dr. Smith opened his mouth for a moment before finally settling on only one word.
“Alright.”
Before confirming the time of the surgery with Sierra, he had already spoken to John. After hearing the situation, John already had someone transfer one million dollars into the hospital’s account and told him to do everything possible to treat Sierra’s
mother.
The only condition was that Sierra must not know, so she would continue believing she had to earn every cent herself.
