Sierra said nothing to Pamela.
Pamela glanced at her, taking in Sierra’s stressed appearance. For a brief moment, it felt like she had gone back to when they
first met.
The words slipped out before she could stop them.
“If that thing didn’t happen back then, do you think we could have been friends for life?”
“No,” Sierra answered bluntly.
With Pamela’s personality, she was never going to be content. Even without that incident, the two of them could never have stayed lifelong friends.
“Since we can’t, let’s talk about John,” Pamela said, unsurprised by the answer. “You don’t want him to focus his attention on you. You don’t want him telling you how to live your life.”
Sierra turned her head and looked at her, not quite understanding what Pamela was thinking.
“I don’t want that either,” Pamela said, meeting Sierra’s eyes without dodging. “We’re both in agreement when it comes to this.
”
“What are you trying to say?” A flicker of emotion appeared in Sierra’s eyes.
“Let’s work together,” Pamela said, openly stating her aim. “I’ll give you all the money I have saved over the years. Once your mom’s condition is stable, you take her and leave Jade City. If you agree to that, let me handle John.”
Sierra frowned slightly.
Pamela looked more serious than ever. “I promise he won’t make things difficult for you or your friends.”
“I already answered this question last time,” Sierra said as her eyes stayed on the display outside the operating theater’s door. She wasn’t interested in this topic.
“Last time, I used John’s money to force you to leave. It was humiliating, one way or another.” Pamela kept her eyes on the same spot as Sierra. “This time, I’m using my own savings to show you my sincerity.”
Sierra pressed her lips together.
If she had a choice, she wanted nothing to do with John ever again.
But some things would not change just because she wished they would.
“A mistress paying the wife to walk away… You call that sincere?” Sierra shot back.
“I know some of the things he did to you lately,” Pamela said, not angered by the sarcasm. “As long as he doesn’t give up on you, he’ll keep interfering with your life like this, and I’ll never be able to have his full attention.”
“I have a question,” Sierra said.
Pamela was ready to have a serious conversation, and she sounded more patient than usual. “Go ahead.”
“Why does he say you’re someone important to him?” Sierra asked.
She had turned that question over in her mind for a long time, but never found an answer.
In the five years of her marriage, there had been no shortage of people trying to get close to John. The beautiful, the gentle, the bold… All kinds of women had approached him, but none of them had caught his eye without exception.
He had only loved Sierra from the beginning.
