John looked at Kenneth as if he were some idiot.
“What’s with that expression?” Kenneth said, annoyed.

John said nothing. If Sierra was ever going to accept Pamela’s terms, she would have accepted the terms he had offered her back then.
“From what Pamela said before she left, it sounds like she plans to go after Sierra,” Kenneth said as he changed the subject because he really could not understand what his best friend was thinking. “Are you going to talk to her about this?”
“What is there to talk about?” John asked.
“Tell her not to target Sierra,” Kenneth said, trying to be reasonable. “You and Sierra are already divorced, and she doesn’t want anything to do with you. Wouldn’t it be pointless for Pamela to go after her?”
John’s gaze darkened, and the atmosphere around him seemed to have become colder.
Kenneth’s heart skipped a beat. He was only telling the truth. Why was John angry again?
“She can do whatever she wants,” John said, his voice cold and his mood unreadable. “I’ll handle whatever mess she makes.”
Kenneth blinked, the gears in his brain grinding. “Who exactly do you mean by she… Pamela or Sierra?”
“Who do you think?” John replied slowly.
“Is there something wrong with your brain?” Kenneth pointed at his own head.
He had never imagined his friend could be this outrageous.
“You divorced Sierra because of Pamela, and now that Pamela wants to give Sierra a hard time, and you’re still backing her?”
“I only back those who are mine,” John corrected him.
Kenneth tried one last time to talk some sense into John. “Don’t forget that the only reason Pamela’s going after Sierra is because you keep interfering in Sierra’s life.”
“And?” John’s tone was calm.
Kenneth was completely confused.
What did he mean,
“then“?
What normal person would do something like this?
“That’s her choice,” John said, his eyes resting on the woman on the monitor, his black eyes darker than ever. “If she doesn’t want to deal with any of this, she can come back to me. I’ve already given her a way out.”
The corner of Kenneth’s mouth twitched.
How was his “way out” any different from a dead end?
Anyone with a working brain and a shred of pride would never take that so–called way out, no matter how desperate life became.
Kenneth was still wondering whether he should keep trying to talk John around when John’s phone rang. Pamela’s name appeared on the screen.
John answered. A small, tearful voice came through. “John, where are you?”
“At the company,” John said, his tone calm.

Kenneth rolled his eyes so hard. His friend’s ability to lie through his teeth was impressive in the worst way possible.
“I went to the hospital and wanted to comfort Sierra. I just wanted to tell her not to worry so much, but she got agitated the moment she saw me and even hit me with her purse,” Pamela said, her voice turning into sobs. “I even have a wound on my forehead.”
“I’ll have a doctor take a look at it,” John said, his voice gentle and patient. “I’ll come back when I finish what I’m doing.”
“Alright.” But before Pamela hung up, she added, “By the way, can you stop going after Sierra for a while? She only hit me because she’s upset about her mother. Normally, she would never do that.”
“Her mood is none of my concern,” John answered quietly. “All I know is that she hurt you.”
“But…” Pamela tried to argue.
“Behave. Go home,” John said.
Kenneth was flabbergasted.
