Sierra’s chest tightened. She turned around, eyes full of wariness as she looked at John.
“What do you want?”
John met her gaze, expression calm. “Nothing. Just chatting with you.”
Her fingers slowly curled into a fist. Her nails dug into her palm and tore open the half–healed wound and made it bleed. It hurt, yet she felt nothing.
“She’s the one who started talking nonsense in front of me. That’s why I hit her,” Sierra said as she forced herself to stay calm, unwilling to let John turn her work and life into a mess.
John countered unhurriedly, “Back when I stood up for you, did you ever see me reason with anyone?”
One simple sentence cut down every explanation she had prepared.
The streetlight clearly lit the expression on her face, but everything was dark behind her, just like her future.
“If you think I did her wrong, fine. Make me pay ten times or a hundred times like you did before at the hospital,” Sierra said, clutching her bleeding hand, trying to find a way to save whatever dignity she had.
But this was John.
When he was ruthless, he wouldn’t even spare himself. There was no way he would let her have things her way. If he were in a bad mood, then the person who put him in that mood must also suffer.
“I won’t stop you if you want to pay her back a hundred–fold,” John said, taking a step closer, his dark eyes fixed on her face,” but the apology is not optional.”
“Is this really how it’s going to be?” Sierra felt her heart shatter into pieces.
“You choose,” John replied.
He had already decided that as long as she softened her tone a little and said she didn’t want to apologize, he would drop the
matter.
But Sierra would never do what he wanted.
She forced herself to adjust and to lower her head for the sake of survival.
“If I apologize to her, you won’t tell my father my address, and you won’t interfere with my final interview?”
Origin Games might have nothing to do with him, but if he showed his face, the other side could still be pressured into rejecting her. No one would offend someone like John over someone who matters so little.
“Yes,” John answered, his eyes darkening.
“Fine.” Sierra compromised for the sake of stability in her life. “I’ll apologize to Pamela tomorrow. I hope you keep your word.”
John’s gaze grew even colder.
She would rather betray her own pride and apologize than soften before him. She was getting better and better at making him
angry.
“Anything else?” Sierra’s voice was unnaturally calm. “If not, I’m taking Tommy home.”
Before John could speak, a bright, lively voice rang out. “Lil‘ Sierra!”
Nicholas came into view, jogging toward them. He smiled as he ran, his brows lifting, his whole presence full of energy.

“Nicholas?” Sierra was a little surprised. “Why are you here?”
“Lil‘ Tommy asked me to pick you up,” Nicholas said, glancing toward Tommy and completely ignoring John’s existence. “He said it’s getting late. If you run into some trouble, he’s too little to protect you.”
Tommy ran over on his short legs. “I asked Nicholas to come.”
Sierra paused for a moment, taken aback.
