John’s phone buzzed twice.
It was a message from Tommy.
[Good night, Daddy.]
He had heard those words from Tommy many times, but never had they felt as heavy as they did now. His fingertip slid across the screen twice, and he finally replied after a long pause.
(Good night, Tommy.]
Tommy looked at the reply and pressed his lips tighter.
After they got in the car, Nicholas first took Sierra to have her wound cleaned and bandaged. Only after that did he drive them back to Maple Residences.
He watched them go inside the building and up the stairs before pulling out his phone and texting Sierra.
[Keep the wound dry. Take care of your hand.]
Sierra only saw it after she had tucked Tommy into bed.
She typed out a reply. [Sure.]
Nicholas answered almost immediately. [You don’t look very happy today. Did John do something again?]
Sierra didn’t want him to worry, so she didn’t tell him the truth.
[Everything is perfect today. How can I not be happy?]
The interview had gone well, and her mother’s surgery had been a success. If it hadn’t been for what happened later, it really would have been a perfect day.
Nicholas sent her a voice message after that.
“We’ve been friends for so many years. You really think I can’t tell how you’re feeling? If you don’t want to talk about it, I won’t push it. Just remember that no matter what happens, Holly and I are here.”
Sierra replied with two words. [I know.]
That night, she lay awake for a long time.
She had never backed down when she was in the right, not even once in her twenty–odd years of life. Before she married, she had her parents, and no one dared to push her.
After she married, she had John, and he would not let her suffer the slightest injustice outside.
Now, she only had herself.
But her new life had barely begun, and already she had managed to make such a mess of it.
She wondered if her mother would be disappointed in her after waking up and learning that she had apologized even though she had done nothing wrong.
Sierra didn’t know when she finally fell asleep. She only knew that when the alarm rang, her head felt foggy and her eyes could barely open.
Even so, she still dragged herself out of bed to make breakfast.
Once she stepped out of John’s world, she had to do everything herself. Three meals a day, keeping the place clean, and all the

little chores.
But this kind of life felt real to her, at least.
She tidied up quickly. After breakfast, she sent Tommy to school, then took a car straight to Lakeside Villa.
She was bracing herself the whole way there. Apologizing to Pamela felt worse than getting killed to her, but sometimes, staying alive felt worse than having one’s foot in the grave.
However, Sierra had no choice but to give up on her pride if she wanted to survive.
It wasn’t even half–past eight when Sierra arrived. Pamela and John had just finished breakfast.
When Pamela saw Sierra, she stood up from the sofa and walked over, surprised.
“Sierra? What are you doing here?”
Pamela glanced at John, who was wearing a suit as he came down the stairs. When he saw Sierra, his gaze deepened.
She came.
“Are you here to see me, or John?” Pamela asked, still uncertain. “Do you want me to give you two some privacy?”
Sierra was silent for a moment.
