“So, anyone who disagrees with you is stubborn, is that right?” Sierra met John’s cold eyes in the car, her voice faint. “Do you think that when people don’t do what you want, they’re just trying to anger you?”

John’s grip on Sierra’s hand tightened.

It hurt, but Sierra didn’t make a sound.

“Can you stop being so childish for once?” she snapped.

In Sierra’s eyes, he was no different from a boy.

“Do you have any idea how many problems I have been fixing for you these past few days?” John still didn’t let go. “Why do you think Lucas and those men from the private room haven’t come looking for you again?”

Sierra’s expression shifted.

John laid it all out for her.

“It’s because I took care of it ahead of time. Even if you won’t listen, I still don’t want you wasting your energy on that kind of nonsense.”

He was angry at her.

Angry that she didn’t listen. That she wasn’t obedient. That she was stubborn.

And yet, he still wanted to protect her, to let her run into enough problems that she would one day come back on her own.

“Then… Have you ever realized that the problems you created for me are far more than the problems you solve?” Sierra’s tone stayed calm, and she stopped struggling against his hold.

John’s gaze darkened.

“If you stopped interfering, I could have sold the ring for a better price. I could have found a job as fast as possible. Even if my dad came after me, Holly could have stepped in right away,” Sierra said. “I could have done better than I am now, and I don’t have to worry about when you will decide to get back at me.”

“You really think that?”

The veins on the back of John’s hand stood out, though he did not tighten his grip any further.

Sierra answered without hesitation. “Yes.”

The tone in John’s voice lowered. “Have you thought about what it means to live without my protection?”

“I haven’t,” Sierra admitted. She had never lived a life with no one to lean on. “But it has to be better than now.”

John released her.

Sierra immediately got out of the car. Then, she stood a few steps away from him, clear wariness in her posture as she stood

there.

John didn’t seem to care as he got out of the car to straighten his cuffs and stand up straight. Then, he walked a couple of steps toward her, still as composed as ever.

“You can go.”

“You still owe me an answer,” Sierra said.

She wanted him to make it clear.

“I won’t interfere with your final interview, and I won’t tell Lucas anything about you,” John replied in a cool tone, his manner more distant than before. “Satisfied now?”

“Thank you, Mr. Henderson,” Sierra said.

John’s eyes grew even colder.

Sierra turned and left without lingering. She still needed to go to the hospital to check on her mother.

Watching her walk away without a trace of hesitation, John’s heart sank even further. When Sierra was about to step out of the garage, he called out to her.

“Sierra.”

“Anything else, Mr. Henderson?” Sierra stopped and looked back. A light breeze lifted her ankle–length dress and pulled a few loose strands of hair at her forehead.

John was dazed for a moment.

He had seen this scene countless times before.
